Default oil leak!! need help!!

ok, so i went to top off my oil before i change it this weekend, and like, when i drove my car i came back and there was a whole puddle of oil underneath. This wasnt there before i put new oil in it, and i didnt like hit anything. I think my stepdad told me the wrong weight to put in, he said 10w 30, and the air box says 5w 30. Could this have something to do with it? and if so is there a possibility of major damage to my engine? how do i fix this, ima do an oil change like NOW (as soon as i can get a ride to Autozone) please help!

You have to find the leak. The viscosity of the oil shouldn't matter.

Yeah, using a different weight oil wouldn't have caused the leak...LoL...

get under there and do some investigation! The first step is finding the source of the leak...

Easier said than done . Ima pull it up on some blocks now and check where its commin from. from what i have seen so far it looks to be near the oil filter

one time i did an oil change on my friend's car and when I took the oil filter off,
the gasket on the oil filter was still attached to the block, of course i didn't know.
i put a new oil filter on wit another gasket without knowing, got it all done and started the car, oil all over the place

u might wanna check that since u said the leak was near the oil filter

ok, done the change, no filter gasket stuck, oil in the filter first, every thing so far so good. I looked more around and it seems that it was the oil filter that was the cause of the leak, of course i dont know why it would all of a sudden start leaking with out any physical damage or anything (it was perfectly fine untill this morning) I drove it around the block and its sittin in my drive way so i can monitor if it is still leaking

ok, so i've been watchin my car closely since i changed the oil, and there appears to be no leaks any more ( i was scared this morning b/c there was oil in my parking spot at school, but its the same oil from yesterday )

I do however notice a weird smell, could this be attributed to previous driving w/ low oil? or could it be anotehr problem all together. My brake pads do need replacing so it could be that too. Just wanted to know, thanks for help guys

weird smell is probably coming from the oil that dripped onto your exhaust. as you drive it will eventually all burn off.
