AT - 5sp. Transmission Swap
As some already know my AT SS transmission has gone to hell in my 98 honda prelude. I went to a few transmission shops around the area today and they pretty much told me I need to buy an new tranny. I dont want to do that, who knows how long the next AT will last. I figure it's going to be a lot better for me in the long run to do a 5sp. swap. Plus who wouldn't wanna get rid of their AT. sooo . . i was wondering if anyone could help me out with a list of all the parts i need for the swap. Also if anyone has any of the parts i need for sale. Any/All help is greatly appreciated!

95 transmission bolts fine into a 5th gen lude. gear ratios are just a little shorter which can be a good thing
unless you get the si tranny...the h23 tranny bolts up fine too, just longer ratios.
most parts you'll need: manual starter, tranny, clutch, flywheel, master/slave clutch cylinders, shift linkage, shfter assembly, manual tranny bracket, clutchlines, pedal assembly, half shaft/jackshaft/intermediate shaft (whatever you want to call it), cluster ( the auto works, but doubt u wanna stare at that haha)...not sure if i left anything out, these are just off the top of my head.

I cannot give a list-but a piece of advice instead. Seriously consider that this conversion will NOT match the VIN of the car. The cost of the swap, done by professionals, could equal the cost of a rebuilt tranny with warranty. The value of the car will go down some due to this mod if you trade it in. All this is said on the premise that you won't be keeping the car.
The SS gearbox works just fine if used as intended. I agree that the evidence is that it is not strong enough for racing. If you are going to school, cruising, or doing a little HPDE-then it will hold up fine.
Just something to think about.

It may have been talked about, good parts don't stay in one place forever. I was just giving people on the forum a chance to sell some parts to someone looking for them.
It's not my fault you didn't have the parts to sell me to make a quick buck.
But neways, i still want to thank the people that helped me. I thank you.

I am still looking for these parts:
5spd Starter
5spd Intermediate shaft (half-shaft)
*Clutch Dampener
*Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
*Reverse Switch
Sorry I am not able to post in the wanted ad's or the classified ads. This is all I have to work with.

As on of the first guys to do this swap, I'll tell you a few things you need to know:
First:
At this point, if you get a factory reconditioned unit from either Honda or Howard Engineering, the AT will certainly last you a good 75,000 to 100,000 miles.
Howard offers complete warranties up to 50,000 miles for 4 years.
http://www.hecreman.com/
The reman unit price includes shipping for the core return, the warranty, and the new trasmission w/ torque converter.
It's usually around $1800-$2600 depending on the level of warranty you want.
It is not difficult to R & R the auto transmission.
At this point all of the issues they originally had with the SS Auto have been resolved.
While I like having a manual, it was a lot nicer to have the convience of the SS Auto. (I live in NJ and there is always traffic.)
Second:
A complete list of swap part is available here:

(I would not follow his electrical part of the installation...)
Wiring information can be gotten in this thread:

Another thing to keep in mind that makes things worlds easier: you can convert your auto ECU to manual operation by moving one jumper on the ECU board. So you don't need a manual ECU, and you do not need to worry about the headaches of the immobilizer.
I have replaced the auto/ss once about 2 1/2 years ago when i had about 55K on it, now i have 90. The guy before me had the transmission replaced once also, but he still had it under the warranty. I just didn't want to put that much money into it again, maybe having to replace it again down the road. I guess that is the main reason I just want to get away from the auto/ss.
Thank you for the better more detailed information on the Electrical part.
Can you give me an idea of how much time I am looking at to do the swap?

Took us 12 hours to do it.
We had air tools and one of us was a Master Mechanic.
It's not hard to do...
The absolutely most annoying parts were:
1) Running the new shift cables.
2) Running the line from the clutch master cylinder to the damper. (I acutally used the OEM line, but most people use a stainless steal braided line.)
