Default will this be compatible

i have 98 ls motor and want to get a 00 and up gsr manual trans since my auto is starting to slip. i want to know what ecu i will need for this to work. i would like to just use a gsr ecu since later on i am going to put in a gsr engine and then i would have to buy parts over again but im not sure if it would be compatible with the ls motor. i know the b series is quite compatible but i dont know to what extent.

the tranny will bolt up fine, but you've got more involved in an auto-manual conversion than just tranny and ecu. other stuff to think about ...clutch master cylinder, pedal assembly, shift linkage, etc., etc. do a search on auto-manual tranny conversions and there's a few write ups that will give you all you need.

i understand all of the things you mentioned that are involved and i undertand how to do all of them. this ecu question is holding me up though and no one seems to want to answer me. im not sure if i get the gsr trans and ecu if it will be compatible with the ls engine or not. or if i have to modify the ecu i have now or if i have to get the gsr ecu and modify it to match up with the ls motor.

a gs-r ecu will not work. you will have cel's for all the vtec related items associated with the gs-r ecu. what you need is an ls 5 speed ecu. you also have some welding/fabrication to do for the tranny swap. after installing the gs-r tranny you will notice that you are missing a mount! that is what you need to fabricate. Hasport makes a kit, but it's a little pricy, probably around $400. i would just find a used ls 5 speed tranny and ecu. good luck either way.

my memory is fading, but if you are obd2b, then you will be screwed on the ecu situation. for obd2b ecu's you need an anti-theft code from the dealer in order for it to work in another vehicle. i just can't remember when the obd2a cutoff is.

a lot of people actually prefer the ls tranny on a gs-r. it will fit fine, but just remember that mount situation i told you about earlier. the car was still set up from the factory as an automatic. that means no matter what motor you put in, you're gonna have to fabricate something to solve that mount situation. good luck.
