197,000 miles pushing it????
i got a 1990 si d16a6, first off i heard they are pretty decent engines. for not alot of money do yall think i should replace the motor with the same one i already got but with like 30,000 miles or should i go VTEC? i mean i rather would but come on lets be logical here, who doesnt have a DOHC VTEC swapped into their beaters lol? well gettin back to my question, do yall think its worth building up the motor with 197,000 miles on it or should i replace the motor with another d16a6 or can i build mine with all them miles?
i like to be different and a SOHC sleeper wouldnt be bad, would it? any bad things about a d16a6 out there i dont know about?

Yes, they are SOHC non v-tec, J/K. Are you building this for turbo, na, or just rebuilt to stock specs ?

You may want to consider doing a stock rebuild, it would be kind of fun for you and it is a good learning experience as well. After that, you could always go with a mild turbo, or a JR supercharger which is pretty fun on a D16A6; I had that setup a couple years ago. Your car would be pretty quick, and very fun too. All while staying SOHC like you want to do.
that's getting up there, but it really depends on how the car was treated. my engine had 267k on it, but my sister went through 2 engines in just 200k. (all d16a6's.) the block of the a6 is the strongest of all the d series, so if you're looking for a big d series build up, swap a sohc vtec head onto it.
yea i kno its a single non vtec, but i dont think i wanna go turbo juss like all motor but later on i might turbo after im happy with the build up
so bagpipe goatee you think i should use the a6 block and what i think its the d15 head? aint sure....
and yea ive been maintaining my baby pretty well and babying it for all this time
and yea i was thinking of doin a stock rebuild. goin out and gettin a 35,000 miles d16a6 and building that to be my SOHC sleeper.
so CRX_1.8T, wat setup did you do on urs?

blah! screw rebuilding the d16 non vtec. I would get a d15b Vtec. 130 HP right out of the box. and its Vtec. Convert to OBD1 to run it right. Thats what I would do.
You can get a d15b vtec for like less then 500 bucks SHIPPED.

how many LBs of boost can a d15 hold?
and why dont you think i should rebuild a d16a6? they are pretty nice.
other than that could you point me in the right direction to get a SOHC VTEC head?

It's not how much boost it can hold it's how much power it can hold. A small turbo can be boosting 15 psi and be fine on a d16a6 but a t3/t4 can be boosting 8 psi and blow it to smithereens. This is an exaggeration but you get my point. Stock d16 rods are pretty thin and aren't good for much over 200 hp from what I have seen. Set a power goal and then build towards it. Remember tuning is the key to making a big number and having the motor last.

When I removed it last year, here is what it was, not very much to it:
D16A6 w/ 87k original miles
Jackson supercharger with 8 pound pulley
K&N short ram intake
DC header
DC exhaust
And that was it... what is funny is that my little CRX beat quite a few other cars with just that little setup. Several modded 1.8T's (Passats, jettas, Golfs, Audis etc), a couple early 90's IROC Z28's and its cousin the TA, and some other import cars.
I used to call it "the little SOHC that could" LOL. I never took it to the track, but I beat a buddy who ran a 14.2 in his hatch so it was at least that fast. Like I said, my old setup definetely was not a crazy *** one, but it was enough for me to have plenty of fun with it for a while. The main annoyance was the blower's belt, which seemed to need tightening quite a bit. But that isn't hard anyway.
If you want an all out straight line *** kicker, then get a turbo. But on the little twisty roads around my area, the blower was fun as hell.

thanks guys for all the replies. i think im gonna supercharge my d16a6 and do some minor motor work to make my motor somewhat decent. im juss tired of everyone sayin SOHC sucks and aint worth it. well, they'll find out soon enough....
thanks again
thanks again
do you think the motor would hold boost alot better equipped with some EAGLE rods and pistons...?
my questioning is almost over, im really leaning towards the d15 head with the d16 block? sound good, gimmie some input. THANKS!

well i aint gonna put no nitro on my baby juss yet, but will eventually!
how hard will a d15b swap be into my 1990 si hatch? and how bad is it goin from a 1.6L to a 1.5L? any difference?
other than that question, would there be any other D series motors that yall would swap into your car if you were in my shoes? im leaning towards an entire d15b swap but didnt know if like a a6 block would work better with a d15 head or any other way.....
input please thank you much

yeah, i agree with crx_1.8t mostly, i'd either find one of those engines or just get the head off one of those engines. it'll run the same either way, but if you want a whole new motor, its cheaper to just find the head, and use your existing block or something. yes eagle rods i've heard good things about (i believe with those you might have to notch the block? search, i dunno) but yeah, just for your help searching, putting a vtec head on a non-vtec motor (especially with d series) is called a "mini-me".
oh, edit---
the d15b is kinda a fad, its not a bad engine, its zippy and everything. its got low end torque, midrange, and high end power. nothings wrong with it, just when i do mine, i'm sticking with stuff thats usually cheaper (almost discarded), such as i have a good d16a6 block and crank sitting in my garage that i got for 5 dollars. its awaiting money for good rods and pistons and a vtec head of "whatever the hell i find." good luck with yours.

yeah im gonna go d16a6 block with EAGLE rods and pistons and d15b head
thanks for tellin me what "mini me" was i didnt know
and yeah i figured out that piecing a motor 2g is cheaper, thanks

Why do you think you need a rebuild or a new motor? Is the current engine still running well, not burning oil or leaking it out every orifice? Does it smoke? You might still have some good miles left in that stock D16A6, even with basic bolt-ons.
If it *does* need a rebuild, I'd say go ahead and swap it. The parts for a rebuild could end up costing more than a swap.

nah there aint really anything wrong with my motor other than i dont have a cam cover(**** looks cool all stickin out and spinning haha)
but i didnt wanna go ahead and spend money and like do some motor work, such as camshaft and cam gears and **** along those lines
i have CAI and DC headers EXCEDY(dont know how to spell it) clutch and my interior, well i dont have none......i completly stripped it out and when i say completly i mean it. all i have is a gauge cluster, driver seat, and a steering wheel.
but on the other hand no there really isnt anything wrong with the motor i juss didnt want to go ahead and spend money if the motor aint gonna last that much longer......you know what i mean, i mine as well go and get a SOHC VTEC motor and start to build that.
