Default V6 tranny problems

For those who have had their auto trannys go out in their V6 accords what kind of driving were you doing. drag racing, aggressive, or normal day to day driving. Wondering what the chances of mine going out, currently at 80k miles and normal driving with spirited once in while. ext warranty good to 100k miles

If you are having any problems then I would have the tranny replaced. I had mine done and I could not have been happier. I drove mine normally with some hard driving mixed in there.

Mine went out at 76,000 miles normal driving. I was second owner got the car with 60,000 on it and checked all service records, etc. Its a 98 v6. Bought a tranny from H & A transmissions out of CA they offerred the best warr. 2 yr. unlimited miles parts, labor, shipping, and rental car/towing. They also used all OEM parts and provide an in line filter. Good luck hope you dont. need one. My car now has 107,000 miles on it and approx. 1 yr. left on warr.

warranty is only for years 00-01. All others are screwed. I dont think it matters if you drive aggressive or not, they just seem to like to crap out.

Very true. It really doesn't matter how you drive. Some go out some don't. I've seen them fail at 40k and I've got cars with over 150k that are fine. And if you do end up having to buy a tranny the H&A trans. are excelent. We used to use Howard's trannys for customer pay but the H&A units are much better and they have very good support if you have any problems.

not true - extended warranty on our 98 saved us the cash on the THREE TRANNY REPLACEMENTS ... we're on #4, brand new, not rebuilt and finally seemed to get one that works - meanwhile we sued Honda (lemon law) and got a little extra for the trouble... hated to do it... but when your car is in the shop more than you get to drive it, well...

Honda actually issued the extended warranty on those years so that they didn't have to send out an official "recall" ... bad auto trans on the gen6's accross the board

also mileage warranty resets once you get a new tranny, from my understanding

go talk to your dealer, and good luck

Wrong, I work for a dealership and 98-99 are not covered under the trans extension. Sometimes Honda will still cover a 98-99 OR late model year 2002 out of warranty but they are not covered under the trans warranty and as far as I know it does not reset your warranty. It sounds like you had an extended service contract or they goodwilled it for you which is a different deal. I just goodwilled a trans for a 02 Accord 4cyl. with 38000 miles on it that was spewing tranny fluid out the axle seals.

Also it would not have been a recall because it was not a safety issue. Honda as they usually do, voluntarily extended the trans warranty on some models. They were not forced to do so by the NTSB.

So what options does someone have if they own a 98-99 v6 auto, Is there any way to fix it, Or does it have to be rebuilt or replaced. Is it better just to sell the car and avoid the problem? I have the extended warranty on mine is there anyway of getting my tranny replaced before I hit 100,000 or do I wanna keep the one I have?

It doesn't seem to matter how you drive. As I stated, I've seen them go at 30k miles and have cars with 150k on them that are fine. I'm sure that the harder you drive the higher the chance of it going out but it's pretty random. Also, if your car is modded (turbo, engine mods or even just exhaust) a dealer can void the warranty because those are items that can void factory warranty. I denied a kids claim because he was some jackass that had watched 2F2F a few too many times and came in and started shouting at me about how I was going to pay his tow bill and get him a rental car right now because he was busy and we better have a tranny in it tomorrow. I used my powers for evil and told him we were not going to fix anything because he had some crackerjack turbo and intercooler on it. He called honda customer service and tried to throw me under the bus. Honda told him they would send out an inspector in 48 hrs to make a decision. The inspector told him they wouldn't pay pay because of the mods at which point he told me his parents are rich and he was going to sue us for voiding his warranty. That was a year and a half ago and he's never come back. I see him driving in town so I know he got it fixed.

Edit: 4cyl and V6 both have the problem.

cool - i'm guessing then that the dealer was just not communicating well with us... ...which wouldn't surprise me, because they were a bunch of disrespectful slimeballs and we ended up taking our business to another dealership in the end

and either way - our trans went out at 75K then we put less then 10k total on two rebuilt transmissions - #4 is a charm and I'm still brand-loyal (no thanks to the folks at Sloan)

thanks for the info/ clarification : )

Sorry if I came across a bit rude. I actually had a car that didn't make it off the rack. We started it up and were cycling through the gears and it sounded worse than the one we pulled out. Think of the great feeling you get having to tell someone that the trans you just put in their car is bad and you need it for another day or two. I hate the 6th gen autos and cat converters. They both are items that shouldn't fail at the mileages they quite often do.

I'm glad you found a dealer you like. It's unfortunate that some bad ones give us all a bad name. Mine has a well deserved reputation for not overselling people. If we tell you your car needs something it does, we're not just padding our wallets. Unfortunatly alot of people don't see the value in having factory trained techs that only work on hondas fix their car and end up spending more money taking their car to an independent shop a couple of time to fix it right. Even the good independents in our town call a couple times a week with questions.

Only the 98-99(00?) are J30A1. The rest are J30A4. The A4's went direct ignition and ULEV.

I had mine go just last week actually. I have a 2001 V-6 w/ about 85,000 miles on it. I was slipping alittle for about a week & one day I ACCIDENTLY through it in D4 while I was rev-ing... I thought I was in d4 but, yeah... I wasn't. Destroyed the trany... drove it on 1 the whole way to the Honda dealership, 5 days later I got my baby back w/ a BRAND NEW TRANY FREE OF CHARGE thanks to the trany re-call w/ the 100K mile ext. war. So point is... if it's slipping make sure you don't pass the 100K mark & do something about it before it does.
