I need you guys' opinions on something.

Between these two, which was the better buy (click on the numbers)?

With #1, I ended up having to pay about an additional $700 to replace the timing belt, both axle boots, and other mechanical upkeep. The front and back bumpers are still fucked (the back one is cracked and the front is scratched) and the car still has a lot of superficial scratches (will I need a new paint job to fix this or what?). My conclusion: I would have ended up paying about the same or even less (I'm guessing dealership fees wouldn't exceed $700, if that...anyone know how much dealership fees generally are?) if I had went for #2 as #2 was already in excellent condition.

Thoughts?

Edit: Are there any changes in design in the Civic from 96 to 97?

Go with 1. Number 2 has an exhuast on it so most likely it was dogged. Or keep shopping. Do you want a auto seeing that both are auto? And no changes were.

 

yea i agree dont buy an automatic or you will regret it in the future big time trust me and dont give me that i dont know how cause i have taught plenty of girls how to drive 5 speeds

 

Honestly, wouldn't get either of them just because they're both auto.

But if you had to choose one of them, I'd choose number 2. Mostly just because it's in better condition than the '97. From what I've read, there isn't really any notable difference between the 96 and 97 years other than minor cosmetic changes, if nothing else the '97 would be a tiny bit heavier.

don't buy them. just be patient and the right car will pop up. how long have you been looking for a car? buy a car thats worth buying. don't buy anything that in the long run isn't worth putting money into.

[NEWBIE ALERT]Just so you guys know, not only am I a newbie here, but I'm COMPLETELY clueless when it comes to cars, LOL. With that said, brace yourselves:[/NEWBIE ALERT!]

1) What is an exhaust? You mean that there's a modification like a muffler?
2) Does "dogged" mean "modified?" Mechanical modifications depreciate a car's value, right?
3) What other reason(s) is manual better than auto other than the fact that you can go faster (which is not a concern of mine...I just want a nice looking, gas efficient, dependable car...too bad Civics are the most stolen cars in US of A ...anyway, yes, I only want automatic cuz I'm I always want to have at least one hand free at all times if you know what I mean ) and that you can save even more gas?
4) I ended up buying #1 over the weekend...I'm kinda pissed that I didn't get #2 instead (complicated reason...don't ask), and the more I think about it, the more sure I am that #2 was the better buy. #2 sure looks EXACTLY like #1, and the condition of #1 sucks in comparison. That said, I have some more questions:

a) What's the cheapest and easiest way for me to get my bumpers fixed/replaced?
b) What's the cheapest and easiest way for me to remove those stupid scratches and get my car looking like new again?
c) The rear window is tinted but has bubbled up like mad crazy. What's the cheapest and easiest way for me to replace the tint?

A friend told me about this site...it's awesome! I was never into cars at all whatsoever but now that I actually have a car I like, I'm actually becoming interested. Once I get the basics refurbished, here are my future plans to beautify my black stallion:

1) Get a spoiler.
2) Get new front and back bumpers.
3) Get inexpensive mods on my lights and maybe add blue LED lights somewhere.
4) Get new skirts.

When I finally win the lottery, I'm also gonna get some rims. No lowering of my car because I don't want to worry about speed bumps. Just want a cool looking, but yet still functional/practical car. Just my goals. Once my trial period is over, I should probably post the above 4 goals in the Appearance/Cosmetics subforum, right?

Edit: I only looked for about 3 weeks. I couldn't wait any longer as not having a car was too hard on me. Need something to get around. I got into a car accident and I only had liability so a rental car was not provided. Thus, I needed a car ASAP.

What the hell is a ricer? If you're talking about a racer or some sh*t, I don't know how you quickly arrived at that conclusion. If you really wanna help, why don't you put some little more effort into your post and explain what exactly a ricer is and how I fit that stereotype, because really, I definitely don't see how adding nice mods to a car constitutes being a "ricer," considering that all the pics I'm seeing here have mods as well.

Anyway, I was only able to find one other comparable $5000 or under Civic. My choice stinks, but oh well, nothing I can do about it (#2 was sold yesterday anyway).

Edit: For the indecisive guys, are you basically saying that a model just 1 year newer could compensate for the scratchy paint and fucked up bumpers?

I know you'd agree that a car can be a representative of one's personality and I'd like to have my Civic a little more aggressive looking and a spoiler and bumpers will do this.
