Default anyone make their own manifold?

i need pictures and info on making your own turbo manifold, except i do not want to see any of these crazy Ram horn ones, just simple UNEQUAL length ones i am able to make in a small garage.

also, i have a huge piece of mild stainless plate steel, it is like 3/4" or thicker. i also have 3/8" stainless, which would be better for the manifold.

i got a 1/4" T3 exhaust flange off my friend. (just the rectangle one).

should i use this or make a better one out of the thicker steel? his warped when he welded it.

thanks.

Check out the welding forum, there's people who make non-ram horm ones all the time. Here's my log mani I made.

The simplest manifold you can build:

1 head flange - $20 -$30 in mild steel, or cut your own.
2 1" schedule 40 el's - $10 on McMaster.com
2 1" schedule 40 t's - $30 on McMaster.com
1 turbo inlet flange - $cheap

Trim the pieces, weld a log manifold. Mild steel is easy to weld even with a cheap SMAW welder. With the log assembled you just figure out where you want the turbo, then cut the rectangle out of the log to place it where you want. You'll have a manifold that will last forever that costs less than $100. Performance? Not nearly as good as a full-length, but it will actually spool faster.

did you place your BOV between your turbo compressor and intercooler? inetersting, any reasoning?

Yea. No real reason, it just kinda ended up there.

I figure it can't hurt. If you think about the air being rebounded back from the throttle body, it has a better chance of getting past the bov before it opens if it's closer to the tb. I could be totally wrong, and probably am

looks like its all one piece.

so what is the easiest way to bend the piping, on the manifold plate side, so that the head bolts dont get in the way of the piping?

we did one on my friends hatch, and i forget what size the mcmaster elbows were but they were too large of a diameter and if welded on they would have interfered with the head bolts that bolt the mani on.

so we cut them and hammered them in a v shape kinda thing then welded them on.

sorry for the horrible technical language.

I got 3/8" stainless from a friend that is in the machine shop up here at Penn College, the thick *** mild stainless i got from my gf's dad, who works at a big welding place.

if you go to any welding/fabricating shop, you can find all of the metal and elbows you need.

I just did a stainless log style... lemme tell you... don't do stainless unless you have a TIG welder at home. just do mild and have it ceramic coated after, you'll save hella money!

It just looks like it's 1 piece because I grinded down some of the welds. It's the same 2 90's and 2 tee's that most people use. I had a problem with the welds getting in the way of the nuts in my past couple manifolds too...but grinding them down a little seemed to solve it. Maybe using allen bolts would solve that as well, since it has a smaller head.

Yes i meant all one piece becuase you did a good job grindig it all down.
what diameter piping did you use?

also, whe you cut the echuast port holes in the plate, did you use a hole-saw or actually make them the oval-rectagular shape of the head?

i am goig to have mine cut with a plasma, so i figure i will just make them the same size. but my friends old set up he just used a hole saw. maybe thats why his head bolts got i the way.

BTW the stainless plate i get free pretty much everything but the tubing is free.

also, i am thinkiging about gettig looking like sporkcrv's and taking it to a harley place i know and getting it chromed, good idea or not? or just paint it. the one i seen before rusted out real bad after just sittign for a week.

thanks.

I don't remember, I think I juse used a link in the welding/fab forum

I bought both of the flanges from bmcrace.com, they do awesome work and have awesome prices

I painted mine when I finished it, but the paint just kinda flaked off somewhat after a while. Chrome would be kinda cool, or get it coated or something

thanks.</TD></TR></TABLE>
