Default Non-Stainless Exhausts

A lot of companies offer exhausts with mandrel bends, resonators and all that good stuff but they're not fully stainless, but rather, only the muffler is.

What is the life expectancy of any non-stainless exhaust that is, lets say, 2.5" in diameter? I need to get a new exhaust but am worried I'll regret buying one thats not stainless, but then again I don't have all that money to spend.

Let me know~!

Also, whats the general consensus on buying used stainless exhausts?

Depends where you live. If you live somewhere with a lot of snow, and salt, your screwed, I would also think if you live somewhere near the ocean it would not last long because of ocean spray. My greddy evo2 is stainless and I love the fact that it will last a long *** time

Since your in ohio if you dont go fully stainless then your going to be screwed. I have a fully stainless exhaust that was made from SUS409 and it rusted very quickly. It only lasted me about 2 years. Look for something that is fully SUS304. Thermal(lifetime warranty), greddy (3yr warranty), invidia are just a few to use sus304. But IMO thats what y ou should go with.

Stainless is alot more expensive, it's more expensive to work with and it's more expensive to buy so i dont think your going to be getting a catback for 200bucks.

Sounds fair enough, but what is the OEM exhaust made of? Didn't honda design it to last the life of the car?

But anyway, I am guessing that SUS409 metal is crap and this exhaust below is probably made from it? :

By no means is SUS409 crap, it's alot better than mild steel or alumunized steel. It's just a grade down from SUS304. That one looks to be SUS304 actually.
Looks like a very loud exhaust too.

Ooooooh, so they can be told apart visually?

Doing a search on that SUS409 turned me onto the RS-R EXMag, since I am going to have to swallow the price I started considering it but their site didn't list any applications for my sedan. I am digging their tone, the oval muffler casing and the

Know of any other manufacturers who make low-noise exhausts that have a smaller tip similar to the exmag? or if the exmag is avalible for the sedan?

Then again I just read some of their exhausts have been known to start rusting.

The ex-mag is the one that rusted out on me.... they gave me a free replacement but the one that rusted out had rust on it within a few months of putting it on, i wouldnt suggest it for ohio. Do a search on ex-mag rust and you'll find the thread. Becuase they sent me a replacment i sold the replacement and made my $ back so it's all good. Now i'm in the market for a nice exhaust.
I considered the greddy sp2 and the thermal stealth. These both are on the quieter side and i decided to go with the thermal. I have an exhaust clip of both of them(if you want it AIM:Alomar2b) but the thermal stealth seems extremely nice and with a lifetime warranty how can you go wrong?

This is the best price i found on the thermal

Sparkracing on here told me he'd give it to me for 480shipped though so thats what i'm going to end up doing in the end.

Yeah, I realised that it was your post I had read over at another forum right before I seen your reply.

It looks like the thermal stealth is tuned for higher end power, whereas I'd like something that's more for low and mid ranges since my car is not going to be agressively built at at all. Whats your application going to be?

I have a tsudo N1 system on my 95 sedan, it's stainless, I bought it off ebay for less than 350 shipped from rythm motorsports. It's lasted 2 winters in cleveland ohio w/o rusting or getting holes in it etc..... it's a bit loud, but it's practical, functional, and will not rott away every 3 months like non-stainless junk.

for stainless

for fart can

in my experience, exhausts fail from the inside out due to heat and moisture (condensation) so even stainless exhausts will fail.

Just a daily driver with an overpriced AEM CAI. Honestly theres not going to be any difference between exhausts, if your not really built there shouldnt be much of a difference at all. I wouldnt be concerned. If i ever get some extra money i'll be turboing, i just cant see that happening though when i'm payiing out the *** 17k everyear for an education.

tanabe is made with full sus304... you get what you pay for. but if you don't need an exhaust, don't buy one. tune that motor first. don't get it because of the exhaust sound hehe

So yeah guys I am planning to goto the custom exhaust shop tommorow and ask them how much it would cost etc. but before I go I want to be armed.

How long do these crushed bent exhausts usually last, what are they made of? I heard people sometimes get the underframe of their car coated with zinc to prevent rusting, can exhausts be coated too and not rust?

Let me know!

I went to the other Custom Exhaust shop today. Their name alone, "Custom Exhaust", made them seem more equipped to handle my situation... yeah right!

I walked in and talked to a greasy man about it. I said since you don't do Mandrel bent systems I would like to get an estimate for a 2.5" system w/ the longest resonator you have and a muffler.

He comes back at me sayin, 2.5" would yeild ground clearance problems, the longest resonator is a 22" glass-pack one and their "performance" muffler, that even with the resonator the car would still be lould, or atleast have a "tone" to it.

So he quotes me up the following:
2.25" Pipe, 22" Glasspack resonator, Performance Muffler + Tax and all the other small things = $127; With the muffler making up $28 of the cost.
I have no idea what their performance muffler is either.

Umm.. is a glasspack resonator ok? I dunno what they're usually made of so hell... also, does 2.5" cause ground clearance issues to any extent on a civic?

Find a different shop or just buy an exhaust online. Crushbent kinda sucks, he'll prolly used crushed pop cans if your only paying 127 bucks. You shouldnt have any clearance issues with 2.5. I dont remember exactly but i think glasspacks kinda suck because they fall apart, dont quote me on that however.
