Default Question about cat placement and sound reduction.

I put in a modified b16 and my current exhaust setup is this HeaderTech header-->3" flex pipe-->3" KTeller exhaust. I've only been driving it about a week and the smell and noise from not running a cat is really getting to me. I would like to add a 3" cat behind the flex pipe. How much really does the raspiness get reduced by running one and will it be a big deal with heat or anything having the cat right under the shifter. I have to run the flex pipe because the header has a 3" 3bolt flange with no spring nuts. With this setup it pushes everything back hence the cat resting close if not under the shifter. Will the heat melt my bushings and would it be ok if needed to mount hangers on the cat because it's going to come close to where the exhaust hangers are. Sorry if this reads funny I'm really tired and am not thinking right right now.

Edit: Would it be bad to just have a cat welded into my exhaust? To buy a cat with 3" flanges welded on is like 150 while just the cat is 90.

the cat makes it much less raspier. im running a magnaflow exhaust with magnaflow cat and theres absolutely no rasp AT ALL.

as for heat, the cat is not directly under the shifter. its closer to the front area of the linkage. so it shouldnt be a problem.

when i got my exhaust/cat (universal cat) it also came with a test pipe. i went to meineke and only asked to get the cat welded but they said they wouldnt/couldnt do it right unless they installed the exhaust too (fitment reasons). it cost me 100.

Mine will rest farther back than the stock location due to me having to run the flex pipe after the header. I'm going like this header-->flex pipe-->cat-->exhaust.

Anyone have experience with moving the cat farther back?

Do you have any o2 sensors after your cat? If not, just move it a little further down. You won't be helping your cold start emissions, but it'll get the job done.

No I'm OBD1. Will the cat get hot enough to melt my shifter bushings? A hot shifter is not big deal but I don't want to melt the bushings.

why dont you put the cat right off of the header then put you flex pipe after? ex. header--->cat--->flex pipe. If it is THAT close to the shiter and woried about it then I say move it!! The closer the cat is to the motor (has to be hot to work properly) then the better it will work!! Just my 2 cents

I was going to do that but that means getting flanges welded onto the cat which mean mo' money. Maybe I'll quit being a cheap *** and just do it like that.
