1999 Prelude SH need advice going turbo and ATTS
Hello Everyone,
I have a Red 99 SH that I'm going to go turbo with. What's my best option considering all the work that needs to be done? I'm concerned about reliability and ease of maintaining. I'm thinking of these 2 options:
- Remove the atts unit and have something fabricated. I've seen threads that it can be done but haven't seen exactly what is needed. Will this break?
- I'm going to have the block sleeved and balanced. Should I just buy a base H22A4 block and have that worked on? Is the crank and everything else the same if I get a bare block? Is the real difference in the oil filter location and the atts replacement of the intermediate shaft and differential? Are there going to be other mods needed?
If I swap the block and remove the ATTS, would this allow for a base exhaust since it wouldn't have the ATTS to go around? The base is more common to find already done custom fabs.
Am I going about this the wrong way? I'd appreciate any advice as I'm about to move on this whole thing. Selling the car is not an option. It's actually harder to find base models than SH's right now. I'm not worried about money. I want to do the right thing once.
Thanks in advance

If it was me, I'd buy bare 98+ base block and have that sleeved. Once it comes in you'd be able to use your crank. As far as differences in blocks, what you listed is pretty much it. I never got the chance to compare the trannys but number of people told me that: SH block+base intermediate shaft+ SH tranny- won't work. I guess the casing is different, or maybe the differential. And I've asked before if Quife could be used in place of SH diff. and never got a clear answer. This is the thing you need to look in to first.

The answer to this is yes. The only thing different about the two is the tab on the piping that ataches it to the block (or crossmember) is farther down and it's also about 4"+ longer for the SH. You'd be probably going 3"+ home made exhaust anyway so it doesn't make a difference.

I had JRSC on SH engine in base prelude (not wired for ATTS). So I quess you can also disable the ATTS (not taking it off) and go turbo, without ever having the option of LSD (due to tranny). Hopefully what I said makes sense.

You should contact ChrisRicketts here on Honda Tech, he has a 333 HP, Turbo 5th gen SH. Im sure he could tell you all the info you need to know about the Turbo/SH combo.
The ATTS transmission using a output and input shaft on the left side output. The ATTS unit input shaft is what seals the tranny on the left side. I don't believe you could use the tranny without the ATTS unit. At least not without some pretty in depth fabrication.
As far as using the base block, make sure it has locations neccesary to bolt your ATTS unit to the block. There are four bolts at the four corners of the unit that are used. I think you may end up having to use a base transmission with the base block. This could be a very good thing. It would allow you to get a LSD.
The other nice thing about losing the ATTS setup is space. With the ATTS unit in place ther is no space for anything on the backside of the motor. It really makes life tough. Especially if you start going through clutches due to the increase in power from your turbo.

You cannot use a base tranny with an SH block, the ATTS will not bolt up, and the oil filter would be in the way anyway. You cannot use the SH tranny without the ATTS.
It has nothing to do with bolt patterns, the base block will bolt up to the SH bell housing perfectly fine.
You don't have to do anything with the tranny or the block to run turbo on an SH. Ideally, you would want to run programmable management in place of the stock ECU, anyway, which will render the ATTS nonfunctional. The car will still drive fine.

no......ChrisRicketts has 377whp.....333wtq. thanks though. i no longer have the SH block and tranny though. i switched over to the base. but what shark is saying is dead on. anything shark says.....i agree with. if he says that i'm stupid.....i'd believe him.
from my personal experience with a type sh to base conversion, i'd say- if you plan on having lots of money and you don't mind spending it on this......get a new base block, and base tranny. i boosted on my stock sh block for about 4 months on 9psi (i know it's stupid) and made 266whp running rich as fawk. you don't remove the ATTS though. it's just kinda disables itself. you could remove the ATTS, but then you'll need to get the intermediate shaft from a base model, then fab up a bracket for it to bolt up to the back of the block, and you'd also need a base tranny.
as shark said----sh tranny = sh block only.
----------------- base tranny= sh or base block.
if you want to make some REAL horsepower, and if a turbo kit isn't gonna be enough for you in the long run, then i'd say invest in a base block and tranny. then sleeve the block.

Ive got a turbod sh and I feel that the atts is hindering my power. I am running uberdata on a p28 ecu. I guess my next step will be to buy a base block and tranny thats fine id like to build a good motor anyway. Im guessing ill be lucky If this motor goes 2 more months anyways. I keep learning from trial and error 6000$ later and still only in the 14s wtf.
You can use a SH trans If you have some base tranny parts laying around, you just have to switch the bellhousing case to a standard case and the atts diff. to a standard diff.
The problem is that the atts diff. is actually longer than a standard h22 diff. and once you put the standard diff. in the SH case you can't shim it up that much to make up the difference so you have to use a bellhousing case from a standard trans which is narrower.

I personaly have witness both blocks being built, alopez94 on here origanaly had a h22a4 SH block on his car, he switched to a base h22a4 block because he got it sleeved, when we went to change out the crank from the SH block it would not fit in the base block, i dont remember exactly why, but i just know we ended up using the base crank because we could not get the SH crank to work in it..
so if you plan on going with a base block, i wouldn't rely on your sh internals fitting in there..
anyone else confirm this?

It was 98+ SH, and 97 base block huh. 97=50mm mains, 98-01=55mm mains. Rod journals are the same.

that may be the case, i dont know the exact years of the blocks..
