Difference between gold & black top engines?
I was test driving an s2000 today, and I had them pop the hood for me. And the engine had a gold top where the DOHC VTEC part is on. But i'm looking at pics of s2k's online and I see them with black tops? Is that because they're different engines? Or is it like the b series, where someone just put a red valve cover on for looks? I'm confused.. thanks!
In the United States, the '00-'03 F20C has a black sparkplug cover. The '04-'05 F22C has a gold sparkplug cover. Where you possibly testing a newer S2000?
interesting. It was an '03 silver with red interior. But it had a stolen recovery title, and i believe some minor damages, but they fixed it. It looked pretty good. Do you think they just put on a new valve cover? or is this a jdm motor? The motor had black markings (like pernament pen writing in the front of it). Do the jdm motors have more power?
wait now that i think of it. I test drove an '01 s2000 a few days ago and i remember the vtec engagement being a lot more noticeable and louder. I remember test driving the silver '03 one today and i could not even notice the vtec engagement. Could this be a engine swap with a F22C new motor from a '04+ s2000?
look at the engine code to find out which engine it is
but like said above
us 00-03 red valve cover with black sparkplug cover
04-up red valve cover with gold sparkplug cover
lol...if vtec engagement was hardly noticeable on ANY s2000...something was either really wrong or the engine wasnt warmed up yet.
yeah you can't vtec the car untill its all warmed up...theirs a different rev limit for each temperature bar in the s2000 for the begining 3 bars...once your temp gets to bar 3, vtec away...

exactly. Can't judge soley on the color of a spark plug cover, especially on a car without a clean title.

spark plug cover is very simple to change over.... there are a lot of cosmetic differences you can see from just looking at the car... and you'll know if it's an ap1 or ap2...

just look into the title. some cars have a salvaged title because the original was lost, so they re issue it with a salvaged one...

^^^ If you are saying that a car is issued a salvaged title because the original title was lost, this is not accurate, i know this because last year i had to get a replacement title for the civic we sold before buying our S2000...they just send you a new copy of it, in Georgia it costs $18...
Salvaged title means that the car was totalled or theft recovery and was sold at salvaged price at one point or that the titled was transferred with the car in salvage condition...this could mean a total loss and its just parts, or it could mean the car needs a few parts and will be good as new...
But salvaged title means the car was in an event where the title had to be transferred with the car in a "salvaged" condition...the condition can vary...

You are correct hypnosisracing. At most, if you lose the title, the vehicle's new title earns the name "rebuilt" title. A lot people have to do this with cars from the 50's, or older eras like that, because the original title has been lost.
