Default Question about cat placement and sound reduction.

I put in a modified b16 and my current exhaust setup is this HeaderTech header-->3" flex pipe-->3" KTeller exhaust. I've only been driving it about a week and the smell and noise from not running a cat is really getting to me. I would like to add a 3" cat behind the flex pipe. How much really does the raspiness get reduced by running one and will it be a big deal with heat or anything having the cat right under the shifter. I have to run the flex pipe because the header has a 3" 3bolt flange with no spring nuts. With this setup it pushes everything back hence the cat resting close if not under the shifter. Will the heat melt my bushings and would it be ok if needed to mount hangers on the cat because it's going to come close to where the exhaust hangers are. Sorry if this reads funny I'm really tired and am not thinking right right now.

Edit: Would it be bad to just have a cat welded into my exhaust? To buy a cat with 3" flanges welded on is like 150 while just the cat is 90.
