Default '95 accord LX V6 (AT) won't start?

This car is actually my friends. We are just a couple of amatuers trying to save $$ by doing the work ourselves. Here's what's up. His car just wouldn't turn over, so we took the starter out and bought a starter on ebay for $50 bucks. We waited for about week or so for the starter to be delivered and then installed it. Well it turns over just fine now but still won't start.

We smell alot of gas when we try to start it, plus can practically see gas fumes coming from the air filter so I figure it's getting fuel. We took the spark plugs out (which were wet with gas) and made sure they were good. Then we took a spark plug out and grounded it to chassis and saw a spark so we're getting a spark.

I here the fuel pump activating once I turn the ignition to on. And see the check engine light come on for second then turns off before I try to start it(which is normal I'm sure).

RPM's of course don't move, but sometimes it sounds like it's so close to starting.

Thanks for any suggestions!!

PS- I have read a little about the MFR? How would I test it? Where is it? Could this be the problem?

is the battery full charged? check your main relay under the dash. also, check your ignition coil.

-Battery seems charged because it's cranking the engine over with ease, but I'll try to start it while a friend jumps me.

-I kind of want to check the Main relay for last because it looks really hard to take out. But I might just have to tackle it sooner than I'd like.

-How can we test the ignition coil without buying a new one?
And could it really be bad even when I physically see the spark plug spark?

-I haven't touched anything involving the timing, so i think it's ok, but good suggestion. Plus I don't know how to check it.

~thanks for your patients guys!
