How long do u guys warm up your teg during winter?
i usually wait until my rpm drops to 1200-1400....it takes around 2-3 mins to reach that after a cold 20-30 degrees night. what is the best bet? should i warm up longer?
here in houston where we rarely see a 30deg night I will let it warm up for a good 15-30 seconds before I leave. I also don't put a lot of load on the engine until the coolant is warmed up all the way. There are a lot of different trains of thought on how to properly warm up your engine on extremely cold days. Do what you feel is sufficient, most people that say what you should do have only their own experience to go off of, and they only do what they do because someone told them.
I let mine run for one minute, then start driving. General rule is to keep RPMs below 3000 for the first 5 minutes of a cold start.

hmm... I have taken it over 3000rpm before it was warmed up, what does that mean?

I let it warm up for 5-10 mins (its been kinda cold in Ohio of late) and then keep a try to keep a 3000RPM ceiling until fully up to temp.

i used to warm up 5-10 mins, but someone told me don't idle too long for warm up, then i reduce to 2-3 mins, dunno why, anyone knows?
I try to let it idle until the temp gauge has moved. Then i keep the rpms down below 3000 until i get ont he freeway. By that time it is fully warm

I start driving as soon as I start it.

Just general rule of thumb is not to rev past 3k until the enigne warms up, although I personally go and hit 4k when I have to merge onto traffic while the car is still cold. Just DO NOT HIT VTEC WHILE THE MOTOR IS COLD.

If it was really cold the night before, I will go outside after getting dressed, start the car, and run the defroster + A/C and the rear defogger to help clear the windows. I leave my doors locked and go back inside and get the rest of my stuff together, then go back outside and head out (anywhere from 2-5 minutes). If the car has just been sitting, and the engine isn't still warm (after work), then I will sit for at least 30 seconds before going. Gotta let that oil circulate.
I was under the impresiion that VTEC will not engage without the proper oil pressure, which is not reached until the oil is sufficiently warmend up. The honda oil filters have a bypass system that bypasses the filter temporarily because the oil will be too cold to flow freely through it just after startup on a cold day. So, as far as I know, VTEC wont even engage. If you floored it right after startup, the big cam never comes into play. Someone please correct if this is inacurate.
The temp last night up here was......... "-6 Farenheit, or -21 degress Celcius!!!"
I forgot to plug in my teg, but in the morning, it started up with 3 chugs, and the car started shaking cause the fan was on at 2. After 15seconds, the engine smoothed itself out.
the steering was stiff, clutch was stiff, shifter was stiff. I don't shift higher than 2500rpms, and I never go under 2000rpms. I always let the car warm up for 3-5 mins. After about 5mins, everything returns to normal.

Yeh I live in New Jersey so it's been kinda cold lately. I go out in the morning after getting dressed and I start up my car w/ the defrosters both on and it's usually like 6:15 so it's dark and cold. I wait like 3-5 mins back in the house until i get all of my things together and out i go. When i leave i always shift at like 2500rpms. Then once the temp gauge is where it should be then I'm good to go.

well i let mine idle for 2-3 minutes then start driving, i never hit vteil the thermometer is open all the way, but i do shift around 4 after the 2-3 minute idle session.

It was -1 here today when I started my GSR. Man the thing started hard, I think I might need a new battery. Usually I just let it idle for a 1 minute then drive it. With these cold *** temps it takes 5-10 of normal driving to get to operating temp.
Just keep it below 3000 until its warm.

It's been freezing here in Ohio of late, so I HAVE to let it idle for 5-6 minutes in order for me to even be able to see out of the windshield. I turn it on, and then go inside, then come back out and scrape the windows and windshield, then hop in and go. So I guess it sits there for about 8 minutes warming up. Any less time, and I would have to hold my breath inside so it didn't start to fog beyond drivability.
BOTTOM LINE = WINTER SUCKS

I wait until it idles at an even 1k... about the same time the temp guage decides to wake up and start climbing towards where there are marks. Is it just me or does the engine sounds completely different when its cold. Like its hollow, just metal on metal... I feel sorry for you ohio guys, I was up there couple weeks ago and it is rough! Not to mention a group of 6 chase cops and one laser shooting an empty highway at 2 in the morning. Talk about bored. Bel 980
I guess one of the chaseres left his radar on in the car b/c i got some K before Laser went crazy.

I think that you should warm it up for about 5 minutes or until the rpms drop to 1 or so and then drive it lightly when you first start out you will know that the Vtec hasnt warmed up yet because it will make a weird noise but then after that you should be straight dude
