Location of VSS
Seems like I have beat the )(*& out of this VSS thing...but its still not fixed. Went to acura...new VSS sensor >>$190!!
I need to know where it is on the car, I know the speedo cable runs from gauge to tranny..I found that. VSS connects to the back of the gauge?? the blue plug? But..should I follow that blue plug away from the gauge to the sensor..or is the sensor in the guage???
What year/cars VSS can I use to swap with???? Should I just put in a new cluster?

Where that plug goes in, that is only the VSS signal amplifier. If you remove the speedo from the gauge cluster, there is a black plastic peice on the bottom of the back of the speedo. It will have two screws holding it on the speedo and you will see where there were two screws that held it in the back, and a couple of solid wires on it, that is the VSS. I don't know about availability of that part seperately, even from a junkyard they like to sell the whole cluster.
ok...I have talked to several people about this....and they are telling me a different story. They say its on the tranny! Whos right? I'm replacing it because Im getting a code 17(VSS)...now what should I replace?? guage cluster..or the peice on the tranny? its a CRX with a B16....they say 90-93 Teg will fit it, and I saw the part...looks like it will fit..but I don't know if thats going to fix my problem!

First, is your instrument cluster stock? Is the unit in the tranny a cable drive type or an electric? Is your speedo cable properly seated in the speedo drive unit with the small wire clip holding it in?
Assuming you have a cable drive type, and your instrument cluster is stock, you need to get a multimeter and test it like the manual says. If your speedo works, yet you get a code 17, then the problem is between the gauge and the ECU. I've explained this before, don't know if it was your post. Here it goes again:
The ECU gets ground (-) pulses from the speedo unit, to clairify, the thing you look at to see how fast you are going. If you take your speedo unit out of the gauge cluster, you will see that the cable turns a drum. In this drum there are 4 magnets. Below the drum there is a very small set of contacts. Each time a magnet in the drum passes the small contact set, it causes them to touch. When they touch, it complets a ground circuit to the ECU. The unit on the back with the blue plug is just some sort of pulse amplifier. The pulse amp. has 2 black wires going from the board to the cluster. One lead MUST connect at the (-) mounting screw for the tach, and the other goes to a speedo mounting screw. If the pulse amp. isn't grounded at the tach, the circuit won't work. I don't know why, but I do know that any other ground will not do.
Take a multimeter and set it on the continuity function. Put one lead of the meter on the wire (pin) at the ECU that is in connector slot B16. Take the other lead and put it on a good ground. Jack up one side of the car. With the tranny in neutral, spin the front wheel that is not touching the ground. The multimeter should beep or whatever yours does as you turn the tire. If it doesn't, then check continuity of the wire from the ECU to the blue plug on the back of the cluster. It's a simple ground circuit, so finding the problem should not be rocket science.
