help please! "rattle noise"
I hear this rattle type noise when i drive my car. Eventually when i drive it for a while it only does it on full throttle. I was thinking it might be the heat sheild but not sure. Thanks ahead for any help.
i had a 95 gsr teg that did that and turned out to be the heat sheild around the cat,
riped it off and no more rattle

My car was squeeking extremely bad... To the point where I hated to drive the car. I think it was the CV Joints because I knew they were going bad...
But one day I went under the car when it was still running (and squeeking quite badly) listened to the CVs... And then listened to the Catalytic Converter. Bingo
This was a lot worst due to my bad Oxygen Sensor, and the car was idling very low... Actually at about 200RPM.
So that night, we got the Megan Headers on, and pulled the entire exhaust assembly forward when we secured the Y Pipe to the Cat, and voila, no more squeeking.
I wouldn't say rip the heat shield out completely... It is there for a reason, but I would deffinately look into getting that exhaust piping to come forward about an inch or so... I'll post pics in a second to show you what I'm talking about.

Hope that helps... You can see how far the Catalytic Converter should be from the heat shield... But when it was squeeking really bad, it was touching right up on it. So that would be a dead give away.
Good luck...

i ran my 95 teg without a heat sheild around the cat for about 3 1/2 yrs. and had no probs, if it served a big purpose why dont they come on aftermarket test pipes?
i'm also talking about the one that wraps around the cat itself not the one att. to bottom of the car

a catalytic converter gets hotter than a test pipe.
a 'cat' has a ceramic honeycomb design inside that is used to clean up your exhaust fumes, so the restriction gets it really hot.
whereas, a test pipe is a straight through design.
if that rattle noise isnt any heatshields, i'd be careful... could be detonation. they say it sounds like shaking a metal can with marbles inside...
i've heard it on my car before and it does sound like a rattle.
good luck.

point well taken

Well I didn't say that it would have any major affect on the cars performance... I just said it is there for a reason. And that I see no reason to rip it out if the problem can be fixed with the heat shield still in tact.
Just my opinion on the topic...

the cat gets hot enough to set stuff on fire. the heat shield radiates the heat out. if its the bottom one, you are fine, rip it off and dont aprk on the grass or leaves. if its the top one, your floor could get VERY hot.
could very likely be your heat shield on your cat just like everyone says...
mine does the same thing, but only when i start up my car to warm it up in the morning or if it hasnt been driven all day...its soo annoying and embarassing cuz its so damn loud...it rattles the hell out of everything at around 1500 rpm
best way is to probably replace your whole cat (if it is your cat) instead of removing the heat shield so you wont start any fires lol

yeah if you want the underside of your car to possibly melt take the heat sheild completely off
or just do what i did when i had that problem. tighten all your bolts down as much as possible.

Well I wouldn't say it is neccesary to replace the entire Catalytic Converter... Just figure out a way to make the entire assembly come forward. Mine initially started making noise, simply because the stock Y-Pipes mount came off its connection.
I am pretty sure the shop I had do the maintenence (Yea, Yea dont flame me... The Auto Cross was in two days, and I had no time to change a timing belt out
) knocked it off the hanger... I guess they thought I was some stupid ricer who would come back the next day asking them to fix whatever was wrong, so they would charge me for a new rebuilt lowerend.
So... We just took off the stock exhaust manifold, and bolted up the after market one. When we did that we just pulled the exhaust system forward. And when we did that, it moved the Catalytic Converter off the shield. Simple.
Good luck with it though...

I replaced an integra cat in my hatch when i swapped my stock exhaust with aftermarket, it was rattling loud too. I simply take off the cat and checked it out, everything was fine, but i flip it vertical and this 4 inch tube came falling out. I don't know what the purpose of that tube is for, but i removed the tube and the rattling stopped. Worked out good for me.
Typically that tube is supposed to be attached... Sounds like your Catalytic Converter got burnt out... By any chance was your car running extremely rich for a prolonged period of time? Maybe a bad Oxygen Sensor that didn't get attention for... O lets say... About three years?
Hit any huge pot holes of any kind maybe? Because that pipe doesn't just seperate itself.
Just a thought...

the upper and lower on both sides, all sealed, have to be pressed out and in.
call up your closest parts store and they will sell them to you
