Default Advice Lowering EJ1 [Cost and Safety Important]

My younger brother recently bought 17" wheels for his 1993 EX Coupe. Since bigger wheels make the gap between tire and wheelwell appear bigger - it needs to be lowered.

He's doing this on a budget. (Car was purchased for $750, wheels and tires cost him $600.)

That said, what is the best method and brand(s) to go with? He probably isn't too concerned with improving the handling, but I'm sure doesn't want to degrade it either. He has friends saying, "I'll heat the springs for you", but he's said he wants to do it correctly. I think just enough drop to get it looking good is best - we need to hit a compromise with the rough roads there. The side skirts are scraping as is, but will be replaced w/ stock as soon as he can get some.

Please reply if you've got experience w/ lowering.

The wheels are 17" and tires appear to be 205/40 R17.

If you've got experience with lowering, I'm all ears. All comments toward a safe and budget friendly drop are appreciated

Before any rice bashing, I'm not going to bother passing it on. So you can really say whatever - but your better of keeping it to yourself. Besides, doesn't that bumper cover look like it's trying really hard to be stock w/ a lip?

The car when I bought it last July I (Sold it to him when I left for college):

A reply! Holy snap. Thank you b18c. So I can assume lowering springs are all he really needs - do most run shorter shocks or are stock okay?

For the Stechs stock shocks are fine, they dont lower all that much and arent a big different in springrate compared to the stockkies.

Thanks very much. So are S-Techs the general favorite among lowering springs? I think the 1.8/1.7 drop should be just right.

Keep in mind. Springs settle. You'll end up at around a 2" drop maybe half a year after installing them. If you're looking for a mild drop, go for Eibach Pro-Kits. They've got good springs rates for the street, and you can ride on the stock shocks for a good while. After settling, you should end up at 1.5" to 1.7" lower than stock.

Thanks for some counterpoint. *looking up Eibach Pro*
