Default grinding from 2nd to 5th

car background 96 hatch cx and 96 itr engine, 96 itr tranny w/ kaaz lsd w/ royal purple gear oil w/ a little lucas oil 30,000 miles on motor bought from HMO
hey like the title says i changed out my front brakes and rear to the si one the i was driving around my car and shifted from 2nd gear to 5th gear and i heard the worst sound ever cchhhkkk then i quickly stopped putting it in i let the rpm go down tryed it again and it went in. i look at my tranny i noticed that there was some fluid on the slave cylinder i bought a new and replace it. after that i drove around made sure it was good but the i tried that 2nd to 5th shift again and cchhhkkk man thats an ugly sound for me. i don't want to hurt nothing so i don't know what to. it doesn't grind in any other gears. i don't know whats wrong so if any one could give me some help. thanks for your time and knowledge.

P.S. also could u tell me how to fix it or what to do? the best way I'm not to cheap but I'm not rich

Why do you need to shift from 2nd to fifth. Thats a lot of strain on your engine.

Crack open your tranny and check the face of the synchros.... I'm still not sure why you would want to shift from 2nd to 5th it doesn't seem like a very efficient way to drive.

You've never done a second gear pull and then go straight to 5th? Works great in 45mph zones.

There's a reason why they are # 1st 2nd 3rd...... go inorder don't skip gears and maybe you won't grind gears.

The synchros do what their name implys - synchornizes the tranny gears so it doesn't have to be perfectly rev-matched to shift. My LS did that the first day I redlined to the speedlimit in 2nd and went right to 5th. The synchros weren't in the best of shape to begin with, but if you had seen how bad 5th/R were when they replaced them...I was almost embarased those where my parts... Anyways, my guess is that your 5th gear synchro isn't very new anymore. Going from 2nd to 5th (esp w/o rev-matching) is going to considerable lower 5th gear's lifespan.

Go in the order, even for a second it will save the tranny.

You probably heard about doing this from a muscle car guy. Corvettes have a devise to save gas in there tranny, when they are crusing it will skip from 2nd gear to 5th (even on manuals). Its not that you skip on perpuse its that it keeps the driver from going into gear (kind of like we cant go into 1st when we get out of it moving). But they can do it because they have alot of tq and power to back that up. What do we have? None of that

Corvette skip shift sucks big time. many owners mod to eliminate it.

you're synchros can't keep up when you go from 2 to 5. keep it up and it'll get worse. why not just shift in order real quick? saves gas too cuz you don't have to wind out 2nd.

Honda recommends shifting in number order this will ultimately damage your synchros if you don't, ofcourse it won't happen in a short period of time but rather over time. I recently had to print this bulletin out for a customer who like to go from 1st to 3rd to 5th, for the 75,000 miles that they owned it. Your probably getting a grind because your trans is made to go to 3rd after being in second. I would just start shifting in order, your grind should disappear, if not get some GM synchro mesh.

My synchros grind from Second into Third... It has actually gotten better recently, for some odd reason.

But earlier last month when I would shift from Second into Third (at about 52MPH-55MPH near 7,100RPM in Second) it would grind horribly. And now it doesn't?

Doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me... Can anyone shine some light on this issue?

It's ok to shift from 2nd to 5th just don't slam it into 5th. Take it outta second move it toward 5th and then give it a second or two for the sychros to slow down enough to put it into gear.

I don't know why you want to do it because as stated above its bad for your engine to run that low of RPM all the time. I wouldn't reccomend doing it either but if your going to just give it second.
