Default 2000 accord - need timing belt?

just bought a 2000 accord lx with 85000 miles from a large car dealer in my area and it came with a 1 month warranty. I took it to my honda mechanic AFTER I bought it (mistake) and they said the timing belt should have been replaced by now and that the transmission fluid was dirty. I'm taking it back to the dealer to discuss the mechanic's report today. My questions: Are there signs to look for that indicate you need a new timing belt? How much is it, and should I push for them to replace it? The car seems to run fine to me. Also, they said the front brake pads were under 25% and that the rotors were overheating. I assume this will be taken care of. Thanks.

there are few signs of a worn out timing belt. If you can see a probalem with the belt, it is going to break very soon. If it breaks you are looking at an expensive repair. expect the replacement to cost $300 or more at a dealer. Yes I would push for it to be replaced.

as for the brakes, or anything else, never assume they will be taken care of. 25% is probably right at the service limit, and so there is theoreticly "nothing wrong" as it will pass inspection just fine.

As stated earlier the interval is 105k on the timing belt. There is no real way to inspect it that is why its recommended to be repalced at a certain milage.

As for the brakes, close but no cigar jweller the service limit on the front brakes is 2mm till indicator. Translation 20% left the pads start out roughly at 10mm new. As for the rear the service limit is 1.6mm or still 20% the rear pads are only 8mm new.

Depending on how you drive and if its mainly city or freeway you could see any were from 3-8k miles out of the front brake pads before they need replaced. And if I were you with them being hot spoted if they are that bad I would replace the rotors too with the brake pads. Simple machining them won't cut it. (no punp intended)

WHAT, you must be smoking crack or work for goodyear. The factory belts whan installed PROPERLY will fit every time perfectly. ALL of hondas belts not just the timing belts are designed and made buy Gates Rubber. They have been for over 20 years. Hell they even designed the timing belt drive system on teh 98-02 accords for honda to avoid the blowing out front balancer shaft oil seal. Remember the re-call. I would never trust a goodyear belt on my lawn mower let alone my car. How can I be so certain you say, easy My dad works for the Gates Rubber Company and has for over 23 years. And just to clearify Bando, Mitsuba, Gates all the same company just come from different parts of the world. Besides that the belts that gates provides come out of a factory jointly owend between Honda and Gates and it has to meet hondas requierment before it can even leave. This why its better then just going to your local napa store and buying a belt that is still made by gates but costs less, its not the same construction.
