Default when welding roll cages, how to weld the top of support bar?

what i mean is the legs that brace the main hoop that go to the back of the car, after notching them and fitting them to the hoop, i know i can weld the side and bottom edges but how have you guys welded the top part???

i have a mig and im pretty sure i can get it, but its close!

could you tack everything together and then split the main hoopin two and then use a slip fit connector and bolt it? although this is probably not race legal huh?

Tech inspectors know that you can't always weld all around a joint, so they will want a gusset on any such joints.

might be pretty important to tell us what racing sactioning body your talking about.

i know for nasa and SCCA the main hoop must be 1 solid peace of metal, and all joints must be welded 100% all the around.

alot of people just take the roof off of the car

holesaw through the floor, drop legs down into holes, jack car up if necessary. when you finish, weld your base plates back over the holes.

Or cut off the roof, and weld it back on later

My info was from an NHRA certified tech inspector. Sometimes a pre-existing 6 or 8 pt is upgraded to a full cage, so the holesaw trick would not work(I have done that though)

wow thats a great idea with the holesaw, i never though of that!

i wasnt speaking of any particular sanctioned body, but my car is a drag car.

i just know that if they saw a roll cage and really looked and saw that the top edge of my support legs werent welded completely around, then it wouldnt be good.

i will try to find some pics and show what im talking about. because what i meanis the back part of the 4 piont harness, where the legs go into the trunk or hatch area. when they meet the main hoop. i was just wondering how some of you get a clean bead all the way around the top, close to the roof.

thanks guys for the responses

as much fun as it would be to sawzall the roof off my civic, i just cant see myself doing it at this time.

although it would be very monster garage-ish,

OR:

since my civic is an si, i could mark the legs where i want them with a marker, put a few tacks to hold them......then lean it forward and support it and weld thru the SUNROOF! i may try this too

^^^^in the link above the back legs look like they are coming from the sides of the main hoop and not the top, is this okay to do as far as support?

cages should be designed according to your sanctioning body's rulebook. rally and drag are two different things.

roofs are spotwelded in the gutters as far as i know. a drill and some chiselling should take the skin off.

Yeah ,You cut the legs off at the floor.then cut the holes. Then when you put it back together take a short piece of tubing that will slide over the ones you cut off.

Then slide the tube up the old one and push it through the holes .Weld the top up.And lift up the cage and slide the short pieces down and tack them where they go

That way you can lift up the cage as high as you want, then weld it all together.
And yes that is A great idea about cutting holes in the floor Mike.Where did you hear about that.LMFAO

Oh yeah ,Also here is an old trick.take some silicone sealer and put it on your finger and fill the part thats not welded up with the silicone. When you get good at it .It looks just like a weld. But don't tell anybody that I told you that.OK?
