Default CLICKING NOISE WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND NOT PRESSING THE BRAKE

ok there is this clicking that sounds like it is coming from the drivers side tire area. the sounds happens when i am just coasting and not pressing on the break or not accelerating. i was just under the car a couple days ago and i didn't see any grease from the boots anywhere. the car also makes a clicking/thumping sound while i am turning. it sounds like the axle but if anyone else has some ideas on what this could be i would appreciate it alot. and yes i have searched i just found people with the clicking noise when turning. so if anyone could clear this up for me thanks

1. Start your car up, let it warm to working temperature, put the e-brake on and rev it steady at 3k rpm. Any noise?

or

2. Raise your car up from the front, wiggle your wheels back and forth, to see if there is any noticeable slack. My buddy has this problem and it would make some noise under his hood.

I hope this helps.

by doing this what would i be checking for. and when i do this would this help or fix the problem? i did just have to jack my car up to change the oil and other fluids. when i put my car down it made some noise but i though it was just from my shitty jack. maybe the cv joint isent in the slot properly since the tire and suppention was in the air for awhile. do you think that could be it?

the steps above is just my suggestion to check if it's making noise on high rev on a stop environment and see if your wheels have a slack on them that may cause it to wobble on cruise. just some suggestions.

hmm jacking the car up and down shouldn't affect anything unless you did something while the car was up. i wish i knew the answer to this, bump!

all i did was change all my fluids and ****. i was just wondering maybe jacking it up messed it up cuz when i put the car on the ground maybe the tire was like \\ and when it touched the ground the rubber stuck to the ground and while the tire was trying to go back to this || it pulled on the cv joint? just a guess i dont even know if that is possable. well any help would be good at this moment

What kind of suspension you have? No good suspension or stock will likely to cause this issue, if it exists. All I can think of now is that maybe the boot isn't ripped, but what's inside them might be loose, etc.

no nails in your tire? could be about to blow and a bubble is forming on the sidewall.

could also be axles, usually make more noise when coasting

replace your axles when you get a chance bro. it would suck to have one of them fail while you're driving and be stranded on the road. they're wear items and you'll have to change them eventually anyway; they're bound to go bad sometime.

If the noise goes away when you brake, I'd start checking the brakes. On many cars (never heard this on my Honda, but normal noise on VW's) the brake pads can move around and make noise. Noise goes away as soon as you brake because the slop goes away. Many people glue their pads to the cylinder, etc to stop the noise. If the noise goes away when you brake, check the brakes.

Wheel nuts - actually I thought you were nuts!
Until I checked...
You're quite right. The Wheel nuts on the front passenger side were finger tight.
I tightened them and the clunking noise, under deceleration, disappeared.
Well done - saved me quite a lot of $$$

While replacing my struts the drive shaft slipped out when the hub flopped forwards. Managed to get it back in ok and completed the job. Next day driving to the mechanic for a wheel alignment i suddenly noticed a “du-du-du-du-du” noise when I decelerated without using the brakes. It eventually even started doing it when turning left or right but still only when not under power or braking. As the noise was coming from the right side wheel/drive shaft I thought I hadn’t fitted the shaft back in properly when it slipped out or maybe damaged a CV joint.
I absolutely can not believe what I read here about the lug nuts causing this sound. So I pulled my head, sucked up my pride and went out and checked my lug nuts, hoping it was the problem but not believing it could be. I mean how could they be? It WAS the lug nuts!! Two were finger tight and two needed another half turn.
I was smiling with joy at such an easy fix but also disbelieving I could have made such a dangerous rookie error. I used a friend’s torque wrench for the first time ever on my lug nuts. It’s something I will never do again unless the tool is mine and I know for sure it’s calibrated properly.
Anyway thanks so much for solving my particular problem. Very happy Chappy 👍👍

I remember several years ago I drove my EG about 1/2 mile down the road before realizing I never finished torquing the lugs onto the wheel after doing some work on the rear suspension. Luckily I remembered before the wobbles started, lol... I'd also imagine the rear to be a bit more forgiving since those wheels aren't used for turning, but regardless.

Dangerous error for sure. I'd imagine it happens more often to lap racers who swap wheels frequently at events, but regardless not something to be distracted with lol.
