Default Prelude engine and ATTS lights went on.....need advice

Hey everyone!

I have a 2000 prelude sh. The engine light and ATTS lights just went on at the same time the other day for the first time and im not sure why. Read the manual and it said that engine/emissions light sometimes goes on if the gas cap is loose - it wasnt. I just got an oil change about 3 days before, I had them check my tire because it was losing air and it had a nail in it - which they fixed. Could this have anything to do with the ATTS light going on? My car has also been slightly shaking when i brake - i figures thats because of my brakes or rotors or something..could this have something to do with the atts light going on? Also anyone know of a good place in the Bay area/east bay where the prices are good and they do a good job? I know i need to get a diagnostic now to figure out whats up but i cant afford to pay alot!!! any advice would be appreciated!!! thanks!

Pull the code. Otherwise randomly guessing isn't going to help.

Get the code (codes), then clear it and see if it comes back. It could have just been a freak reading that caused it. Dont pay the dealer $80 to do it for you.

Just the ATTS light right? No CEL? (Check Engine Light)

Try resetting the ECU. If the ATTS light comes back, pull the code. If you need help with resetting the ECU or pullling the code, just ask.

Also, list your mods, if there's any.

He said both went on. By default when your CEL goes on, so will your ATTS light, as far as I know. It's probably just one issue.

those cheap ones you see at autozone will only get you in the right ballpark, the more expensive scanners you will be spending around 2000 or more, im saving up to try and get that mac tools scanner which is 1600 for the basic setup, 4600 with all the options

Hi everyone--thanks for all the feedback!! My car is all stock no mods. I did end up getting the autozone scanner and just did it--the code that came back was p1456 --P1456 Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Control System Leakage (Fuel Tank System). The fuel cap is and has been on tightly. The scanner only gave me this one code...but both the Engine (MIL) light and ATTS lights went on at the same time.?? Not sure what to do next...any ideas?

some info on car:

honda prelude 2000 sh
no mods
120k miles
just had oil change couple days b4 lights went on
tire had nail in it that i had fixed (could be reason for ATTS light?)
brakes also started squeaking..only a couple times so far..i had one pair changed last year some time..forget if it was front or back..so need the other pair changed.
hmm..thats about it.

Thanks again!

do a search for EVAP they are many reasons that light comes on, and many ways to clear it

The ATTS light will come on any time the CEL comes on.

There are pages and pages of things that could be wrong for P1456 in the Helm manual. Either get a Helm manual, or take your car in to get it fixed.

try resetting the ECU before you take it in. just dissconnect the negative on the battery and pull it completly off for a few mins. If you have a car alarm have the clicker handy as when you plug it back in it will go off.

thats it all done. if the CEL comes back on, then take it in to get fixed or do it yourself.

hey -- i didnt find out exactly whats wrong. but as i was driving home from work today the engine light went off on its own. the ATTS light stayed on. but when i drove again back to work tonight, neither light is on! So they both just went off on their own...but i found this online for the code that i pulled P1456 as possible causes:

Evaporative Emission Control System

Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)
Leak Detected (EVAP Control Canister System

Probable Causes:

Fuel Fill Cap
Vacuum connection
Fuel tank
Fuel tank pressure sensor
EVAP bypass solenoid valve
EVAP two way valve
EVAP control canister ventshut valve
EVAP control canister
EVAP purge control solenoid valve

So should i stop worrying about it now that the lights just went off??

Type-SHH go to auto zone and get that diag tool that i got and pull the code and see if it gives you the same thing i got which was P1456--let me know what you get. I tried to IM you back, but it says i dont have permission to IM. how do i get permission?

My atts light came on and Honda told me I was gonna need a whole new ATTS system and it would be $954. But atts is nothing you need just something that helps the steering on turns.
