How reliable are high mileage CRX's autos
Looking for a good used Automatic CRX. How well do the trannys hold up?? I see the motors are good. First time Honda buyer here. What should I look for please. Thanks
Mike

Autos are few and far between on the CRX. Besides, manuals are easier to work on and the aftermarket is tailored toward the manual. Might as well save yourself a headache and get a manual. Unless you are disabled and you require an auto. In that case then, my bad.
I've seen many manual hondas last above and beyond 300K miles. Your point is?

If your not gonna race it, go with an automatic. Yes they can last just as long as a manual. Just test drive the car and make sure the trans shifts ok
wow you are quite the *** :rolls eyes:
dude asked for the reliability of AUTO not MANUEL trannies. If you can't see the point of my post you are a serious dumbass
to you.

and do you know the difference between 3000 miles and 300k+ miles? Just in case you didn't know 'k' is also short for thousand. You flunk.

my 4d EX has 205k miles, and it is holding up just fine...for now.
It was shifting a bit odd, so i did 3 drain & fill's, and added some stuff to help out. silky smooth now, but i've only driven 5 miles. we'll see what happens i suppose.

Thanks for all the info so far. Want an auto for traffic. I own 4 standards now and my knee is killing me some bad traffic days. Figured a CRX would be a good/fun commuter car and get good gas mileage also....in between nice days on the bike to zip through traffic. I'm looking into one with about 160k on it now.

sounds like a plan. Buddy of mine did a mini me on an auto crx, just to add a little more zip. Definitely a good choice for a commuter. I myself have an auto car for the daily grind and a manuel (in bold just for the jackass) crx for the toy
How much is the crx you are looking at?

i wiah i had a manual, but that may change soon. Might swap this one, also looking at a STD hatch for the cool price of $100.

WTH are you talking about? Autos are few and far between....yada yada...wtf? nobody talks like that, doesn't even make sense. The creator asked if auto crx tranny's "hold up", not how good they are for racing or to work on. And if you keep reading you'll see it'll be for daily driving.

Wow , this forum has some mean flame jobs!! Anyway, looks like all the positive contributors have given me enough to go on. the car I am looking at has 170k on it and asking price is like $1300. Is that way too high??

1300 is good as long as the car runs strong, the trans shifts smoothly and the body is straight and not rusting out. You might be able to coax the price a little lower if you have to fix anything on it after you buy it.
Depends on how well the car was driven and maintained. I've seen a D15B2 & auto trans drivetrain with 420,000 miles on it before in a Civic DX sedan. The auto trans is obviously not as durable as a manual, but with proper care it will hold up fine. And of course, if you do have a problem down the line, there are plenty of used D-series auto trannies out there.
As far as price goes, the value of an ED is directly proportional to the amount of rust on it. If the car is rust free, runs, and everything is in proper working condition, then $1300 is a steal. If it's a rust bucket and has a lot of broken/deteriorating ****, then I wouldn't bother.

i just recently got a hold of an auto project. The shifting in these 4g civic/2g crx's auto trannies aren't the smoothest, but do its job. Drive the car your looking at, and see how harsh the shifting points are, if its jerky, be weary. I believe there are tranny rebuild kits though. Honda recommended adding some kind of AT shift lube. I actually have a spare auto tranny on me.
BTW, I noticed you live in MA...how far from RI/ma border?
And if he's asking 1300, get him down to 1000.

exactly what I was going to say.
If you want some opinions on it worth, take pics and post it up. We wouldn't be able to physically inspect it for you, but you would at least now our opinions by judging the car through photos.
Oh and 160k miles, I consider that a low mileage honda
haha

Whoa! Sorry to those I offended. Sheesh!
I'm not gonna get in a pissing match so I'll just answer the guy.
Autos are plenty reliable. 300K miles can be seen just fine on an AUTO CRX.
Few and far between = There aren't many(very few). And when you find one, it's many miles between you and the CRX.
Get what you want, I was just giving you some ideas, depending on your usage of the CRX you purchase. I'm 27 and have looked at a lot of CRX's in the last 10 years. I have come across maybe 3 or 4 AUTOS in that time period. This is in Colorado keep in mind. So, when it comes time to motor swap, you will have to do a hell of a lot more work than the guy next door, that is, if you do not find an AUTO swap. However, you are using it just to drive to get you from here to there so go for it. You have nothing to lose really. Just have fun with it. They're great cars regardless.

My auto has 92k on it right now. Its getting pulled out in a few weeks for a manual. When my auto hit 70k it started to thump a lot in between gears. Changed the fluid and it was like new again. But now its starting to thump in between gears and slip when I go around corners.
I would think when it comes to being more reliable for the long run, an auto would be better... Cuz with an auto trans u can only rev so high b4 it shifts for u... So u can only beat on them so much... As opposed to a standard which u can rev the **** out of and have unseen damage that will affect the long term engine life... But bottom line, if u do oil changes and tuneups on any car at the right time, it should last u a long long time...
Everything depends on the car's history. If the car was driven by someone who drives like my mom and who performs regular maintenance, reliability should be no problem. But automatic transmissions don't take a beating well. If the car was driven by some kid like it has a B18C under the hood, I would not count on it lasting long.

How did he handle the ECU? Did he just use an auto obd1 or use a rpm swith and the stock DX auto ECU?
I may be picking one up for pretty cheap and since a valve or two is messed up I'll have to pull the head anyway. And a mini-me auto doesn't sound too bad. just for driving downtown and traffic.

I don't believe he could have used the DX ECU since the SOHC VTEC head requires an MPFI conversion.
