Default Backfiring

I have a 94 Civic VX and when im driving on the interstate in 5th gear and I have to give it gas it backfires, then slows down , then finally picks up speed. Ive changed the timing belt and put new plugs and wires on it, any help would be nice.

And im looking to put a H22 as soon as I can get up enough money, what is a reasonable price to pay for the whole swap?

Honestly i'm not too sure about the backfiring could be too much fuel?? maybe bad 02 sensor. I'm not sure but for the h22 swap it will be $2200 for the motor/trans/edu, then good mounts $500, wiring harness $175, and other misc. stuff. I did my swap for 4k

Bad o2 sensor could make it run a little rich - that would explain your problem. Is it orginal?

the cat may be clogged. it could have a piece that gets loose and clogs the exhaust flow which would cause your lack of power. then it builds up pressure and pops and knocks the loose piece out of the way of the exhaust flow.

I was thinking about just cutting the cat off and running a straight pipe

running straight pipe will slow you down on your current motor - and make you 10x louder. If you are looking for better flow get a high flow cat not straight pipe - - at the same time swap out your o2's since you are at it - it will make life easier - and this all should solve the back firing issue -
