Race car and legal issues?
In a few month or so, I am planning on having my honda completely build for a weekend/drag strip monster. Stripped interior, roll cage, new motor and turbo, slicks.... you get the picture... And I want to buy for myself a regular daily driver. Thing is, I still want my accord to be insured and street legal ( with tags and everything) What should I do like registration wise? I dont wanna pay double insurance if I will only use my car for racing. And I dont want to deal with once in 2 years emissions crap. What can i register my accord as? A race car? or second pleasure car? I know a lot of you have daily beaters and strip monsters at home. Are they street legal, or do you trailer them to the strip? I know you can always slap a tag on a car and hope u dont get pulled over but is there any way around it? THANKS!
insuring a race car with a regular insurance company is both pointless and stupid...you will not get any of your money back if you wreck your car on the track...there are some race car insurance companies though, so search for that on google or something...as far as registering your car, i wouldn't bother if you are just taking it up to the track...just buy a trailer....
Your big issue will be emissions if you live in an area where emmissions is required. Lots of these racers who don't trailer their cars live in rural areas where no emmissions tests are done. If you can register your car in an area or county where emmissions tests are not mandatory, you're set! IF not, you might look into having two ECUs, one for emissions, the other for race. Also, you'll have to add the Cat before the emmissions test.
Another possibility is to go to the emmissions station, fail the test, make emissions related "repairs," test again, fail again, then apply for exemption. But most likely you'll have to pay a good bit of money to get the car exempt if it is even possible where you live.
Check with a local emmissions station. They should be able to tell you what can be done if you just cant' get your car to pass smog.
Good luck.

The first question that needs to be answered is "will this car be registered/insured for ANY street driving at all". Let us know that first. Thanks
Yes, I want to still be able to drive my car sometimes. I defenetly want to be able to drive on it to the tracks as well. So yes, you can say that I want it to be street legal, but emissions is my number 1 problem.
I thought about it last nite, and talked to my neighbor who got a wrx sti as his fun weekend car and during the week and in snow and crap he drives a honda pilot. Well I asked him how it was, and he is basically paying full coverage on his pilot and the shittiest liability as state requires on a wrx since its sitting in his garage 95% of the time. Because it is the second car and he has liability only on it, he is paying a fraction of a cost. Only a few hunder bucks a year. So i might do that when it comes with having the car street legal. As for emissions, I aready have 2 cats, but the problem is in the engine. See JDM H22a would throw a CEL, and my car being an OBD2, when tested at emissions center they would hook it up to a OBD2 reader. USDM OBD2 reader would conflict with JDM OBD1 engine and it would be automatic failure. I dont know what to do!

Well you can always do what I do and not worry about getting an inspection
I haven't had an inspection since 2001. There is no way I'd really pass without swaping the F back in because I've got OBD2 converted to OBD1 and lots of other problems like no cat and no DOT approved headlights
I've never had a problem either. I haven't been stopped for anything else though because I don't speed so I'm sure if I was pulled I'd get a ticket for that too. But I don't see the point of trying to pass inspection in a car that gets driven less the 5K miles a year

Well you dont really have a choice if your state is anything like georgia, if your car isnt registered, they send you a letter and put it out to the police departments that the car is not registered, and without registration you cannot get insurance (and vice versa, without insurance you cant get registration)...they work hand in hand with each other atleast here.
If you want a car you can drive on the street still...dont build it to where you wont be able to have insurance and registration for a street car, its really simple...you want some beast drag strip car, well...build it for that but dont drive it on the street, are you going to run your drag slicks on the street? That is kinda silly in itself, and if you DONT use your slicks, with the power your thinking of adding, are you really going to have a car thats worth a damn on the streets anyways? (lack of traction...yaddayaddayadda)...
Sounds to me like you want your cake and eat it too...you'll just have to make a choice whether you want a pure drag race car that is not street legal, or a semi-race car that is, period.

semi race wont pass emissions either... If i drop a turbo h22a and show up at local emission center that is required in MD every 2 years i better bring some vaseline with me cuz obd2 car with obd1 swap and turbo will never ever pass the OBD2 scan and smog check.
