"trusted" mechanic on timing belt...
my "trusted" mechanic told me about changing my timing belt that i'd need to replace my water pump, belt tensioner, and balance shaft belt in addition to the timing belt. altogether, parts and labor, he quoted me $440. is this reasonable? for normal maintenance, do i need all of those things changed? thanks
thats a middle range price, u could find lower if u looked but who knows the quality of the install/parts, make sure he is using dealer parts, also u prolly wanna do the front main seal while in there
Sounds like a good deal to me - Although I did the labor myself and only spent 120$ for the parts.
You change everything together so that it's all fresh and clean at the same time. It sure was fun to do it myself...

heh heh heh, i'm picking up some hints here...
but as much as i would love to not only know HOW to do it myself, i don't have any tools required or the time to do it and figure it out. just a collegiate-sized carport with a few hand tools. i would love to do most of these repairs myself, and would feel a lot better about it afterwards and everything, but it's just not feasible.

That is actually a good price IMO. But just to be safe I would spend the extra 20 bucks if that and get cam seals and the balancer seal and retainer while your at it.

well, thanks, guys. i guess i should go ahead and get'r'done. damn it's a lot of money, though. oh well. can't be avoided, i guess. theoretically, would i notice anything before my timing belt eventually popped? or would it just suddenly happen and shut everything in the car off (and bend the valves to hell and back)?
mine just broke no warnings or anything. I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden my car started to studder bad. I barely made it to the shoulder. But I was lucky no bent valves just a missing timing belt.
$440 seems high. i jsut had mine done this month. i think you can get a kit w/ both belts, the water pump and auto tensioner at honda-wholesale-parts.com or something close to that, you'll probably have to google to get the right site. i had the labor done for $190 by the most trust honda mechanic in the area. so you should be able to get it done right for less than $440. get more quotes from shops in your area
i'm a mechanic and i would say that would be pretty right, if you get the parts through the place doing the work. because of the fwd, it makes for quite a bit of work to manage to change those. good luck bud, i can't wait to get my jdm
