Default Spray gun question

I figured I would ask here because more poeple with a gun would look, what does a normal gun operate at ( what psi ). Also anything to look out for when buying one, looking at a sata one right now.

On an HVLP gun I believe the input should be around 40psi. Any gun made by Sata is a good gun, expensive but good. I bought a couple Sharpe Cobalt series and I love them. Good price and a good gun.

I use HLVP Devilbiss unit,

they are precise and able to do almost anything from base coat to clear ( they are not that good for clear but they will do it )

the input pressure is 40 psi, but I have an adjustable regulator on my gun, also don't forget to never shoot anything important without a water catcher inline with your gun, of course no oiler that would be stupid.

Hope this help

Thanks, see right now I have a 15 gallon compressor which I am trying to determine if it is big enough, I talked to a guy with the same compressor and he said it would be, so I might give it a try.

i used to use an expensive *** kremlin gun but now use a homo depot version cheapo campbell hautsfield. i swear it works just as well as the kremlin and only cost about $40. a close friend owns smooth customs, one of the top custom painting and air brushing shops in the midwest. he has painted everything from $40k bikes to lambo's to old schools... he does the most incredable work i have ever seen besides cal concepts. he uses the same cheapo $40 gun... sounds crazy but the thing works!

if you want to check out some of what hes doing with an el-cheapo $40 gun look at his ebay auctions for motorcycle sheetmetal:

I've never had a problem with campbell hausfield products. I used a cheapo no-name gun from Pepboys.

eBay is my recommendation.

I only use sata.
The aveage PSI is around 40 but thta can vary by gun.
Your compressor would be prety small for painting anything bigger then a panel.

I use Sata and Devilbiss guns...depends on what I am spraying is what gun and set-up I will use. Temp and Humidity are things to look at. If you are doing this at home, do it outside, unless your in Cali. you get less dirt and dust from the interior of a garage. Good Luck with your project. BTW a 6H.P.- 33 gallon tank is what i use, 15 sounds kinda small, but if its a small job and not an overall complete job you might be ok.

Tkae air hose and blow all dust out of of garage and then wet floor to keep all dust down if you are not in a booth it works well.

I already have a set up in my mind, gonna make basically another garage inside my garage, made out of plastic and what not. And I am suppose to be picking up an 80 gallon compressor for free, but not sure how great of shape its in.

Yea thats the best method, tape off smaller are with heavy plastic and wet floor.
The 80 gallon would be much better, I wouldnt advise less then 60.

Well hopefully I can get a bigger compressor, hopefully the one I'm getting for free is not rusted out.

The gun I just bought

Anyone know of any good sites or books to pick up, just want to read on painting

What size tip did you get? I use a 1.3 for color/clear.
What are you using for applying primer? gun? roll on? rattle car?

It will be a little "light" for a primer.
I would suggest a bigger tip around 2 for good thick primer coats.

Makita isnt the cheapest but they come with different handles to better suit your comfort and they are one of if not the lightest buffers out there and they got the best warrenty.
One use on a car will pay for its self and you will use it many times againe.
