Grinding Third
I have a 98 DX 2dr that just started grinding 3rd if i get on it. It kinda feels like the clutch may be sticking. Should i try changing the MTF first before buying a new clutch? Any help would be great. THX
I had the same problem. best thing to do is to go to your gm or chevy dealer and get what is called syncro mesh. its regular tranny oil for them but works wonders on imports. Jon

That is good stuff, but it cost about 10 to 15 dollars a quart. Autozone sells this Pennzoil stuff that is almost the same thing for 5 dollars a quart.

Get GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. Got rid of most of my grind. Used to grind right after VTEC at 5,500 RPM. Grinds a little still past 8,000 RPMs after Synchromesh.

Try new fluid 1st... but if it is ur synchro, nothing but replacing it will help. Might as well replace all of 'em and put in new bearings while u have it torn down.

Wish more people would see that, a lot of people think adding fluid fixes it permanently, all it does it cover up the problem, unless you really have no trans fluid in your tranny. But even then, you might of did some permanent damage.

get teh syncro mesh from the gm or chevy place. you only need to quarts. give it 50 to 100 miles. I didnt notice it stoping until about 75 miles and then 3 or 4 races where I was shifting into thurd at 8700 rpm. And I know that it wont fix the tranny it just preserves it and quiets or stops the noise. if its to far gone it wont do anything, but $20 to fix grinding gears. sign me up all day long. Jon
Mine does the same thing. I tried GM Syncro mesh and it still grinds. So don't think it will automatically fix it. But it is good fluid. The guy at GM told me it was better than snapple ^_^
The other preservation method which you might know - rev matching when you upshift and rev matching w/double clutching when you downshift.
If you want to get serious, find a local tranny guy who does lots of Hondas. The guy who did my engine swap charged me $150 labor, cost for 3/4 & 5/R synchros w/free 1/2 synchros that had 15k on them. I also burn all his chips now, so that could be another reason. That was for an LS tranny, I'm guessing a d-series is much cheaper as far as parts go. Good option if you ever boost.
