while i was driving uphill i noticed my temp guage getting hotter and hotter till i went back down hill when it went to normal temperature. but while that was happening i noticed white smoke comming from the dash. there was still antifreeze in it but the damn car wouldnt start. i checked all the fuses for a break but all were still good. i checked the battery connections and they were on. theres electricial power throughout the car but it seems as if theres no power going to the engine. im not sure if its the starter/alternator or maybe it could just be the whole motor in general. i recently (just last week) swaped it in for a d16z6 and used some parts out of my d16a6. im getting pissed so a reply is greatly wanted. thanks guys

What did the smoke smell like?
An electrical fire or anti-freeze?
If the anti-freeze is low it may have blown the heater core but
it sounds more like it may have had an electrical short..

yeah it did smell like an electricial shortage. what also happened was that the needle to the speedometer burned off too. not sure how that happened but it did. when i attempt to start the car, it doesnt even click or turn.

under the hood there is a main fuse block on the passenger side,
I would imagine one of the big fuses blew..

i checked the fuses and it all seemed normal. i even tried taking the ecu fuse out, disconnected the positive wire, held it for 30 seconds and replaced the fuse to no avail. i heard it was suppose to reset the ecu or something along those lines.
well the needle to the speedometer melted off and some of the numbers on the meter melted away. would it be easer if i replace the needle and the meter or should i get a new cluster. if it was an electrical problem what could it be. have you ever experienced something like that.

sounds like your wiring harness is really messed up from a short somewhere.
you're definitely going to need a new cluster, maybe new ecu, but first find out where one of your wires fried. something shorted out, probably in an area where you modified them (did you go odb1?) and maybe fix that and pray to god no more wires under the dash got melted.
find a wiring diagram of pinouts and do some continuity testing. thats my best idea.

when it started smoking it smelled like an electricial problem but i thought it was just the fumes from the radiator comming through the firewall. it seems as if its an electricial problem but i dont see any of the connections to the cluster burned.
when i swaped the d16z6 in i converted it to an obd1. none of the fuses or connections seem to be burned from the connection to the ecu or connectors.
