ITR security and GPS tracking

The slew of ITR thefts that rocks this community weekly makes me wonder about the security setups people have.
We always hear layer security, and garage garage garage. But as we know, that oftentimes fails.
What are everyone's thoughts on GPS (or similar) tracking systems? We've seen that lojack sucks through many failed recovery attempts. But how about DEI's GPS, or Boomerang2 (moreso for the canucks and califolk now) and similar?
Why don't more caRs have this? Is the TCO a deterrent? The hassle of getting it installed? Are we skeptical if they work? Have we just given up and accepted the fact that one day, our parking spots will be empty?
The number of thefts and the brazeness of thieves is getting frustrating, and the level of police involvement appalling. Those following all the Seattle thefts living in the area can especially feel the pressure.

well many people that have their R's stolen don't have the necessary "layered" security. Many people just run a "good" alarm and expect that to be enough.
Basically everyone knows if they can tow it, no matter what we do it will be gone. But there is kill switches, lojack, detachable steering wheel.
As for other GPS things like lojack, i would assume they all work alike...
I Dunnno, I know that I have not accepted the fact that mine will be gone one day. I constantly check on it, and park it at night where no tow truck could ever get.....

but we've seen that most alarm systems fail anyways and people still go with those... so why make an exception for that?
boomerang2, though, enjoys really high success rates in canada, and thieves tend to steer clear of cars equipped with that

Boomerang 2 works amazing. My girlfriend moved my car off driveway to road with my spare keys (no boomerang 2 transponder on keys) They phoned me within 1 minute. Worth the 500 install and 12$ a month.
Trending Topics
to me it just adds a bit more piece of mind everywhere I park
with B2 I towed my car once without the transponder and I got a call within 30 min asking me if my car was stolen or not

only 500 bucks, thats cheaper than my alarm
what kind of features does boomerang 2 offer and are there anymainstream dealers or is it a internet dealio? is there any type of thing like you can track where your car is on the internet or do they tell you where its going overt the phone?

They have a team that monitors and tracks your car. it works over cellular signal vs. GPS. Not to be concerned about parking lots etc.. . although you may not have full cell signal there to make a call, there is enough signal for them to track your vehicle. (or so i am told)
A unit is put in place on your car, and if it moves without the matching transponder within a certain distance (a few feet) you will be alerted.
In cases where cars go out of cell range, they have equipped vehicles which will go to the last point tracked and track from there. Unlike other systems, I hear that they will go out and find your vehicle for you, and alert police from there... or something to that effect.
Unlike Viper/DEI GPS, you do not have control over your vehicle remotely (via internet or cellphone, etc). It's purely for tracking done on their end.
I'm not sure about dealers and international coverage though. They service canada and have recently introduced it to california, but i don't know about the rest of the US.
It is not a replacemnt for your alarm though. Should just be used to complement it. It just tracks vehicle movement.

They came to my house to do install. If your car moves without the transponder in it, the tracking team starts tracking it, then they call you to confirm its stolen, if it is stolen they contact the police, and the tracking team directs police to your car.
edit** If you car goes out of cellular range they have a helicopter that picks up at where they lost contact.

There was a thread going around H-T about hiding a GPS watch in your car. A watch that sends/receives GPS signals. So technically if your R gets stolen, inform the proper authorities into inquiring the location of your watch. BAM! Kill 2 birds with 1 stone: find your R and find your watch

i believe that this gps tracking watch for children is more optimistic because there are no monthly fees and has internet access. essentially, you are not putting any risk in others' services, which may be in delayed responses. also, the only maintenance is replacing the battery every once in a while to be safe.

20$-45$/mo, and the battery lasts 'up to' 50 hours...
i donno if i'd call that more optimistic.

I had GPS tracking on my car for 4 years.
My thoughts
1) expensive
2) not much security benefit if they tow your car to a underground garage or a concrete building
3) if you part in concrete buildings/parking garages - the GPS transponder constantly tries to get a fix and drains your battery in the process
4) GPS systems pull more current than regular alarms - not good for a car like the R with puny batteries

thanks for your feedback BPR.
1) sometimes that can be offset by a decrease in insurance premiums. was that not the case for you?
2) is reception completely lost in these cases? or can your car be tracked to the last point of signal?
3/4) i know for some they put in an extra battery with the unit so that it won't drain off your main battery. maybe that can be something to investigate.

1) only minimal - equal to stock "immobilizer"
2) yes reception is lost. it can only be tracked to the last point of signal if they are actively tracking the car before it goes underground. these GPS systems are passive - they are not constantly being tracked. The tracking is only activated if the alarm is activated. So if they are able to tow your car away without setting off the alarm - the GPS is useless
3/4) unless you put in a deep cycle marine battery - the benefit will be minimal. My battery would drain if I didn't drive my car for a week. My main problem was I didn't drive my car very often - if you are daily driving it - should be fine.

what? monthly fees? sorry, but i will never go with gps then. i've already accepted the fact that my R will inevitably be stolen so i will layer security with the cost factor in mind.

$20/month
i can track it 20 times a month (more if i choose a different plan) and about $1 per after.
the good thing is that it actually gives you adress if an adress is available. live update. so you could sit at home and track the car while your on the phone with the cops or friend.
down side battery life is only 2 days. but you could hard wire it to your car using a voltage reducer and such.
this along with lojack, and other anti theft. i think you should be good.

so are you telling me that you change your battery every 2 days???
has anyone looked at the 'cell phones' they have on that site with gps? be neat if those came with a car adapter or something!

Planting something like a GPS watch is only useful if you discover the theft early. From my understanding, it takes a little over an hour to strip a car with a competent team working on it.

That's why you think of a VERY clever place to hide it.
Sly-like-fox-I-am ^^
Of course, I'm not gonna publicly mention where I would put it

My point was, if your car is stolen at 3am and you wake up at 7am to find your car missing, the watch will most likely lead you to a shell of your car.
