gsr to type r tranny worth it??????
hi guys im just new in this car mods i have a 95 gsr and recently the second gear is grindin so now i have the option of fixin it or just maybe swap it out with a type r tranny....is it worth it?? does it require a lotta work or just a plug ang play swap?? thanks
The two tranny's are 100% interchangable so that's a non-issue. You have to consider whether you are actually willing to fork over that amount of cash for the performance benefit. Your car will corner better and accelerate better with the R tranny, but a new R tranny, even from Baranco Acura is over $2000. Used R tranny's go for much less, but it may be much less financially strenuous to just rebuild your GSR tranny. Either way, consider going ahead and upgrading the flywheel and clutch being that the tranny will be out of the car anyway.
I own a 95 gsr also was in the same boat as you but went with the type R comptech sold it for 1800 same price as a GSR Tranny why get one rebuilt or even buy a used one not gonna save that much money go type R Baby you'll love it !!!!!

hit up "b18c1_powered_si" brian's a really good guy to deal with, I got my ITR tranny for under $1500 shipped.....no problems whatsoever....
i like the ITR tranny for the LSD, the ratios are shorter 2-5 and it'll leave you above 5700 RPM shifting all the way through 4th gear (if you're redlining through shifts), unlike the GSR.....but 5th gear will leave you revving approx. 300-400 higher than the GSR 5th.....while cruising that is...
ideally putting the LS 5th gear into a ITR would be nice, that way you'd be running even lower that the GSR in 5th....my .02 for the high gas prices

With LS/VTEC. Does it give you a higher redline because I thought the redline for LS was 6800? Yes, I am a LS/VTEC Noob.

Redline is governed by the ecu, not tranny. Top speed would be effected with the shorter gearing but not the redline.
As for getting an R tranny, you benefit from better acceleration with the shorter gearing and better grip and cornering with the LSD. I loved mine on my old GSR engine. You will not be disappointed. One of the best mods I have ever done.
Brian (B18c_Powered_Si) is a good guy to buy from. Dan Phan and Ken at http://www.rcrewracing.com is good also. Dan helped me install my first R tranny at Brian's house. Both reputable and respected guys.
Good luck!

not "better" just different.....then you'll really be revvin.....

dude you only need to do that if your car is auto, going from a manual (like all GSRs are) there is no need to swap ecus.
BTW, to the author of the thread, I would considering trying to get a 98 spec JDM R tranny, cause those are da bomb, they have the 4.7 final drive which the us ones dont.

I think for everyday street driving/commuting, the US ITR tranny is a very good compromise between performance and streetability.
Also keep in mind that with the 4.7 fd your rpm's will be a lot higher while cruising the streets and highways. My friend loved his but I still think the US with the 4.4fd is best. Then again, he liked to race on road courses so it fit his style of driving and his need for the shorter gearing. But he also had a JDM ITR engine in his car as well so the engine and tranny complimented each other very well.
Just keep that in mind when deciding on the two trannies.
Good luck!

If your going to rebuild your GSR tranny I would really consider just getting the Type R tranny. Its really worth it, even on a stock GSR. But I think price is a bigger factor, if you can get the Type R tranny for a similar amount as the rebuild, then go for it. Also take your tranny to a good shop that knows what they are doing. Theres a lot of horror stories with rebuilding trannys. You may want to look at ActiveAeros thread in the Type R forum, he is debating whether to rebuild his R tranny or replace it with another one. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1170953
