After talking to DanGSR about having him rebuild my transmission he suggested that I might be better off just purchasing a new one since they can be had for around $1,500 USD. I could then sell my current one to recoupe some of the cost.
I would attempt to dive into the tranny myself but I currenlty have little to no time at the moment between work and school. Especially since I'm trying to get everything put back together before Expo.
The tranny issue: Makes the whirling bearing sound with the clutch engaged and during the last 5,000miles or so the shift feel began to rapidly deteriorate. I can feel the gears mesh slightly on almost every shift. It's currently not extremely bad and isn't audible to a passenger but it can definitely be felt through the shifter. Tranny has approx 90,000mi of very hard abuse.
Dan said he could check it out but by the time I pay for shipping across the country and if he has to replace all of the sycnros and sleeves it'll come close to $1,000 with labor.
Would any of you guys trust having a local tranny shop check it out? I'm not sure how big of a deal it is, but if I supply the parts is there anything they could really screw up? This would definitely save me shipping and time.
Bite the bullet and purchase a new tranny? The downside is that it could make me pretty strapped for cash if something comes up or if I can't get the OEM unit sold quickly.
Any input?

I think you'll be better off having yours rebuilt. There are a lot of good tranny shops around, you just have to find them. Personally I wouldn't trust my tranny to anyone who hasn't specifically dealt with Honda trannys before.
its not the labor thats expensive
syncros are $300 each
gears are $150+
bearings $200+
add that up, and get some staggering prices
its really hard for me to say, what will need replacing, without taking it apart
and anyone who says otherwise, is bullshitting u
Glad we were able to talk over the options

Maybe Dan could answer this but what areas would a local tranny shop not be aware of in a honda transmission that would cause them to screw things up?
If I made some scans of the transmission clearances out of the Helms manual and provided it to a local shop should there be any problems?

well if your taking it to a Transmission specialist, they should warranty thier work.
and if you bring copies of the Helms manual, they would have to be an idiot to get it wrong.

I think $1500 is a bit low for a new unit. I just paid $1669 for my brand new unit from Curry Acura. I haven't seen anything lower priced out there.
I decided to go new and rebuild my old one when I have time, this way I minimize down time.

dan did a fantastic job figuring out what issue lay within my tranny when the 4.785 was installed.
hooray for dan - wouldnt hesitate to call on him for tranny work...or any other work.

If you need A LOT of parts replaced, just go buy a new one from Len.
I would like to think that Honda employee in Japan knows how to build a trouble-free transmission. There should be zero issue with a brand new unit.
I don't doubt that rebuilds could be as good... but, sometime you have to deal with what-if's w/ rebuilds built by a 3rd party. I hate paranoia & I would buy a new one, if I were in your situation.

After all my experiences, I would probably not rebuild my tranny anymore. See my problems here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=956991. After changing everything, the problem is still there...
If you can get a brand new tran for $1500, I would say go for it. I've looked at used tran before and they all cost about $1000 -- and the condition is really unknown even though the seller said it's "good". So I ended up rebuilding the tran with all fresh parts, which cost $1000 in parts only (forks were fawked).

Parts in tran can add up to $1000 very quickly.

That was an awesome thread man. Sorry to hear it never got resolved. Get a louder exhaust and stiffer motor mounts so you don't hear the transmission as much.

If it were just the whirling noise, I'd say rebuild it. That's the only problem I had and for <$200 it's completely fixed (input shaft bearings). With the shifting difficulties too, it's hard to say what other problems you have (synchros, shifter forks, gears). If you're lucky it would just be a dying clutch disk, but it's more likely some other internal issues.
If you could get a new tranny for $1500 (which I couldn't at the time), the I'd opt for that. You could then part out or sell your current tranny in whole to someone to recoup some of the cost. The diff alone has to be worth a couple hundred bucks.

I didn't solve it, but I also don't care now. I know that everything is new inside, so nothing can break down
