HELP:Need help isolating the soft clicking or knocking comming from tranny area after tranny swap.
Well, I decided to swap trannies and clutch/flywheel combos on my cars.
FYI before the swap. Daily driver; 91 integra had a YS1 w/ Type R LSD sounded like it needed a new throw-out bearing to me.
The car with the problem: 88 crx started off with a B16A S1 tranny.
I installed the S1 tranny & clutch combo in the 'Teg with a LS 5th gear (for my daily commute) and all has been fine for the last 3 months.
So I installed the YS1 in the crx with a new throw-out bearing.
BTW Both clutch/flywheel combos are fairly new.
So on to the problem; when I drive the crx I can hear a soft knocking or clicking comming from what sounds like the tranny area(firewall side). It makes the clicking with the tranny in gear at low speeds. I can't really tell if it does it at high revs/speeds.
I notice when I push the clutch pedal in while cruising around in gear the sound goes away. At idle or reving in neutral I don't hear it either.
I raised the car and set it on jack stands, I had my buddy sit in the car and run it through all gears and rev it at 3-4k revs while I was under the car listening and looking for the source, but it didn't make the clicking/ knocking sound. Only made it with weight on the wheels (on the ground).
I pulled the hood off and and sat in the engine bay with my friend driving around a empty parking lot to see if I could pin-point the source of the sound. It sounds like its coming from tranny/diff/axle area. Anyway I decided to start with the passenger side axle, since autozone has lifetime warranty. So I put in a new one, but these axles had very low miles. When I picked up the axle I noticed the older axle had some play in the bearings when I rotated the shaft that goes into the tranny back n forth. The new one had no play...so I was like . hell yea, this is the problem.
Well, that wasn't the problem . It still makes that sound. Has anyone had a simialr problem? or have any input?
I'm thrown totaly off cuz the ys1 didnt make that sound in the 'teg.
I am really dreading dropping the tranny again...
HELP....

I have the exact same problem, can't figure out what the hell it is! If you figure it out please post up. Good work riding in the engine bay and putting it up on jack stands.
I think it's a contact thing if it's not an axle thing. Like the axle contacting the strut fork or the transmission itself contacting some part of the body like the rear crossmember. I'm kinda sure that may be it as I didn't properly support my engine when dropping the tranny and may have done some damage to the mounts.

could it be any of the bearings in the tranny?
and as far as dropping the tranny, it really isn't that bad, assuming you have a good place to work and proper tools.
i dropped the trannies out of 2 b16a-equipped EF's lately (to swap them).
S1 and YS1

thanks for the feedback....
I ruled out the tranny making contact with the rear crossmember when I was under the car inspecting everything... also theres not vibration in the car. IF the tranny was making contact with the rear crossmember u could definitely feel it in the cabin. ( I've experienced this before)
I also put a jack under the lower control arms and raised them up to see if anything (like the strut fork) was making contact while the wheels were spinning. Everything looks good there.
I could be a bearing in the tranny.... I'm just having a hard time beleiving that because the tranny was fine in the integra.
I I just finished swapping both trannies....thats why I really don't wanna drop it again. Unless I am totaly sure it's in the tranny...
I'm going to try the drivers side axle and maybe the intermediate shaft.... again I'm tripping on this cuz everything worked fine before the swap.

did you align clutch properly and torque to specs?
right clutch? size? flywheel?
sounds like the shaft is spinning around the clutch disk or slipping splines.
when loaded you hear clicking knocking, pressing clutch sound stops.
axle not all the way in trans.
wrong intermediate shaft.
broken axle.

Thanks for the help, but mine's not quite as severe as those problems would make out. I've been running this for about 4 months now without major issues the sound is just worrysome.
Axle was new when I put it in, I can always swap it again and see.
if the splines didn't match up right with the clutch the tranny would not mate with the engine.
I used a torque wrench and torqued the PP to spec.
I can always double check and see that the axles are in right and flush.
Thanks

I'm gonna try the other axle and probably the I-shaft to rule that out.
I did use the correct clutch/flywheel...I had that exact set-up on my integra and all was fine.....
this is a weird one...
