This is why you don't let your car sit
I bought this integra for $250 originally. It needed some work, but ever since I bought it I had drivability problems. Traced down a lot of stuff, meanwhile the owner telling me that the car had sat for close to a year kept repeating in the back of my head. Despite everybody's opinion of the tank just having some bad gas, I dropped it anyway. Here's what I found:
So pretty much the tank is rusted pretty bad, and I need to know what to do next. Try and clean the rust out myself, take it to a radiator shop and have them clean it, or try and locate a replacement (from a junkyard)or aftermarket if I can ever find one. A new tank from the dealer is over $300.

must have been some real shitty gas . i had a car sit for 1 year with my walboro in it and when i pulled it there was nothing like that , no rust at all,

might want to start worrying about yoru fuel lines, filter, pump, etc. but replace the tank.

the car is a 93....I mounted a fuel pressure gauge on the filter and the readings were in spec.....45 psi with fuel pressure regulator hose disconnected, and 36 with it connected. So I think the main lines are okay, all of the rubber ones hooked to the tank will be replaced with new hose and clamps though. I might end up having to get one at the dealer, just not wanting to pay more for a new tank than I did the whole car. That $300 price tag is a little steep.

i'd check a few local junkyards before paying the dealer prices. but then again, it's best to do it right the first time.

normally when a gas tank cap is on the car, it seels it from any oxygen from entering the gas tank making it pressurized correct? If you don't have Oxygen present then you cant make rust.
i had a similar problem with an 1973 international scout 800 a few years back. the tank had major rust. it had sat open for maybe 3 years before i put another engine in it. you just cant find replacement tanks for them. no way. a mechanic friend of mine ordered me in a kit that repaired it. it was by carswell i think.
hey i found it here is the link:
http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htm
worked like a champ. it took 2 kits for the 15 gallon tank. 5 years later it is still holding together.
a little bit of work but cheaper than a new tank.
good luck!

ok, now i understand.
i strongly disagree. once you coat the inside of the tank with epoxy it will never rust or corrode again. its plastic, not metal. plastic does not degrade for 20+ years. i doubt that he will have the car that long. and as far as junkyards go, in the j-yards in all 5 states that i go to they poke a hole in the gas tanks to drain out the gas. that is the first thing that they do. its just too dangerous to let them sit around with gas in the tank. people smoke, the cars get run around on big front end loaders which are not kind to the gas tanks at all. in a commercial j-yard torches are routinely used to pull suspension components ect. in the u-pull it j-yards they cannot let gas sit in the tanks. period. people are just stupid. and when the car is finally stripped, they eventually get crushed. they have no way of knowing whether there is a live battery/charged capacitors/charged ignition coils/combustible crap in the trunk of the car. crushing + live battery = sparks. sparks + gas = kaboom. its a safety/insurance situation. i checked ebay there are NO integra gas tanks on ebay. plenty of camaro/mustang tanks. if they were available aftermarket, they would be there. i only found 4 places on the internet that sell them. they go for 250 plus shipping. -reconditioned- not new. it will hurt if you have to go to the acura dealer for one. i think your next best bet is the classifieds on honda-tech. somebody is parting one out i am sure. the shipping cost can get pretty high pretty quickly.

I would seach on g2ic.com and find someone local that's parting out a teg. Any car that hasn't been sitting for years shouldn't have that rust problem at all. You could probably pick up a tank and fuel pump for like $50.
I found a honda salvage yard probably about 50 miles away or so, and was quoted $50 for the tank with pump and sending unit in tact. So it looks like that will probably be my route. I've heard good things about those sealers you can buy and re-seal your tank, then I've heard some bad things saying that after a while the coating starts flaking off...which is probably caused by incorrect prep work and/or application. When I felt around the top of the tank with my finger it was just too rusted. Thanks for the replies.
I bought my Integra for $600 after it had been sitting for a couple of years in a guys garage. Only problem was the rust around the windshield. Actually its really bad but only really cosmetic. Havent found any other problems yet and have had it for 6months and drive it all the time.
