I am putting in a USED starter that I bought recently. There is some gunk (oil with dirt residue) on the starter and I was wondering how to get it off without damaging the starter... Can I use WD40? The gunk goes into the starter.

just use a wire brush and a cloth sprayed with simple green or break cleaner
