Default D16z6 swap in crx??

well ive been cruising honda tech and my usual source of google for info and keep finding it for sale or mini me. well im kinda getting my buddy into crx's and he might get a killer *** deal at $900 for black si and the body is straight and all! so he was thinking for now a budget mod. So i said well why not just do a full civic ex/si motor swap? i mean u can get them for around $500. but im a B series guy so i dont know much about swapping the D.

i know its easy as **** but what about the wiring? pain? he would be converting to obd-1 and do it the right way. he was gonna do an Ls swap but i was thinking well figure 500 for swap, headers(has exhaust) pulley, clutch flywheel and chip the ecu possibly a decent cam and he's looking at prolly 14.7. that would consist around $1500 plus obd1 conversion. wouldnt be to shabby for about a year. or for you know 2000 he can do an Ls swap and run about 15.0 flat and smog ref it. i know this could turn into a DOHC vs SOHC but lets not get there. as for budget for now, what do you guys say? i mean its hard to get a good clean 90-91 Ls motor..

Why not throw in a D16Z6/D16Y8 with a homemade OBD-I conversion harness, running a P28 ecu? Throw in a cam, you're good for 14's with some decent driving and a light car. I think it's a great swap, I had one. Nice and cheap. The wiring sucks though. You have to convert to OBD-I...

You'll need:
P28
Conversion harness (buy or make)
OBD-I/OBD-II distributor (same internally)

Wiring:

Extend coolant temp switch wiring (on t-stat housing on OBD-I+ engines)
Splice in OBD-I/II plugs
Convert cabin ecu plugs to OBD-I or buy harness (recommended)
Add wires for VTEC, etc.

You can use the stock injectors, just leave the resistor box in. If you use the OBD-I+ injectors (either Z6/Y8), you need to remove the injector resistor.

either one is good. It depends what his long term plans are. And does he like FI or All Motor. Aso is he mechanically incined? I'm asking that because he does a homemade obd1 conversion such as myself then he could run into probems here and there...possibly ongoing problems that could drive him nuts. Now with that said i recommend obd1 either way

yea he is mechanicly ready except he's just now getting into the honda scene from hot rods. Well the Y8 im not sure what thats from. i know its 96-up. but i think its gonna be z6 for sure if he does one. most likely im gonna have him buy an ecu harness and send his harness out. cause i had droppedcrxsi do my harness and made it all plug and play for my gsr swap. kinda pisses me off cause i had an LS swap crx and ran 15.0 or 14.9 if i was lucky! **** if i could have thrown a SOHC and spend $1000 and be faster thats what i would have done!

sweet good info tho guys is there a swap page for dropping in a Z6 in a ef? has anyone seen one? i know i wont have a prob cause the only difference is the wiring. but itd just help!

it varies so much for motor to motor too though. I ran 14.4 with a shitty 60' with my ls. And i know guys with supercharged z6's running mid 15's. Its all case by case.

I'd say just do a mini me, (vtec head z6, y8) it would be way easy.
-vtec head
-ODB converion harnes
-ECU
-Distibuter
vs.
-whole godam swap....

I'd say y8 head, also find a local shop to do a rebuild PnP, and a cam, and you be sitting pretty. but I'm a SOHC NA kinda guy... he could just go turbo+cam. its all up to him.

to me the swap would be easier than a mini-me. You wouldn't have to pull the motor apart and if you know what you're doing you can have the whole thing done in less than 7 hours.

yea i was talking to him about the turbo stuff and its possible but by the time u pay fotr that then its like 2000-2500 and then u bought the motor swap, i mean thats almost 3000. he can get a 2nd gen b16 mounts and shift linkage then wiring and all for about $2500...for now we are looking at the Z6, 14in wheels, tires, clutch, flywheel, headers, for sure. and at that its gonna be cheap. possible getting Hx's or 14inch rotas for 300
