i know some people have put thier flywheel on the brake lathe and shaved 4 pounds off of the back side.. does this actually make a noticable difference?

 

yes . its like a lightened flywheel..

you mean to tell us you had a stock flywheel lightened to 9 pounds? Dont b16 flywheels weigh like 17 lbs. stock? That thing must be the thickness of a sheet of paper. How is its strengh? I must request a pic if at all possible

 

I dont have a pic of it. I weighed a stock flywheel from an blowed-up ZC I was replacing and I think it was 18..or so. I might have taken a picture of the two weighed...but that was about 2 years ago...Ill look around tonight when I get home.

I had a lightened stock one before. It was shaved to 11 lbs, and honestly, I didn't feel safe with it at all. I eventually got rid of it for an aftermarket one

 

Removing material from the stock flywheel is a bad idea. I have some pics from an anonymous shop of one that exploded.

 

Ive been running a stock lightend flywheel for two and a half years now. I bought it lightend and than sent it out to get balanced and resurfaced. When I swaped mine out for it, I believe it was half the wieght of the original. Yes there is a noticable differece. and I have never felt "unsafe" about using it. Even when it was turbocharged. If there is some big problem with lightend stock flywheels I'm doing my best to find its shortcomings!

 

i wouldnt lighten a stock flywheel. and for the difference its just more like rev happy i guess you could say. but go with aftermarket for sure

 

Lighten flywheels that go to low tend to lower revs/power climbing hills or shifting. The reason is the stock flywheel has more rotating mass so once you get it rotating it is harder to slow down so your rev's don't fall as fast, but with a lightened flywheel there is less mass rotating, on the flat surface it does help but any incline will slow it down and when shifting your revs will drop much faster causing one to blip the throttle to match the revs for the next gear. It is all a choice of preference but as I am putting together a motor swap I am going for around a 17-18lbs flywheel to a 12-13lbs flywheel. Just some food for thought

 

^^^true....the lighter you get isnt better as you may think. i would gor for the 12-13 hes talking about, those freakin 8 pound flywheels are insane. but lighter isnt always better

 

There is nothing wrong with lightening a stock flywheel if the weight is taken from the proper areas. Mostly from the outer backside. I've been running lightenstock flywheels for 6 years now in 2 different cars with "no" problem what so ever. 0-60time is improved, and throttle response is amazing.

Of course going aftermarket is not a bad idea either being that they are made stronger, but for just a daily driver with some bolt ons, a stocker can do the job.

 

I really don't want to hijack anyone's thread or anything, but 3 weeks ago I put an 8lb fidanza fly in my rex when I was swapping my clutch and tranny, and it seriously didn't make a difference. I suspected a problem with my rpms not dropping off fast enough before we did it anyway, so I guess the question is, what can make the rpms not drop off fast enough, even in the presence of a lightened fly? a vacuum problem?
