Default B16 cams question....

alright this question may be a bit vauge, but I will be upgrading my cams and valvetrain someday, and I originally wanted to go with all skunk2 stuff: springs&retainers, high compression valves, stage2 cams, and gears.... however, this will put me back at least $1800, which was more than I got the engine for, and I don't really want to spend that much if possible on that stuff.... what are some good brands to buy? I can get Blox type B cams for like $525 shipped, which, according to stats are a slightly more aggressive grind than the skunk2's.... anyone have these and a dyno slip or something? I am looking for actual uses, not just numbers from the manufacturer... Thanks in advance!

Two threads I found about blox cams. The first one has a dyno comparison.

Hey whats up Im running the Skunk2 stage2 cams with super tech s. v. r.
84mm bore on the bottom running 12:1 pistons running the Apexi stand alone
tuned by rpmnyc.com and got 220 whp with 2 passes on the dyno on pump gas. Still not fully tunned yet, might need to go to race fule to pull more power safely.
So the Skunk cams make power. The all motor world is tuff cause you start the
build just like a turbo motor which cost the same and get like half the hp. Got to do all motor for the love of the build cause turbo is where all the powers at.

I don't know about the Skunk2 valvetrain, there have been a lot of horror stories involving S2 valvesprings. Crower valvetrain is better IMO, and not much more than the S2 stuff.

As for springs and retainers, try to find someone who's selling their OEM ITR springs and retainers. They are very reliable upto I believe 9000 RPM.

Cams.. Crower is a well-respected brand.

Cam gears... I'm not too sure. Try AEM? But it may cost more than Skunk2.
