Are you sure your fans are kicking on?

perfectly normal.

When you're sitting there you have no air going through the radiator or past the engine to keep it cooler sooo to keep your engine cool a couple of things happen.

1. Your thermostat will open letting the hotter coolant mix with the cooler coolant and letting your engine stay at a certain temperature.

2. If that doesn't stop the heat from rising then your fan should kick on. This provides two things
a. It sucks air in through the radiator, thus cooling the radiator and the coolant inside
b. It also uses the air sucked through the radiator to blow across the engine, cooling it off.

If you're wondering why it stays cool when you're driving, it is because of the air that is going around the engine and through the radiator.

i understand how the engine is cooled

i think the problem is the fans not kicking on like you said, sucking air through the rad
