Default New Arizona HT Member. HIYA! Pics Inside. 56k..Eeep!

Evening Ya'll. Bout 11pm here in Cave Creek AZ, Well. Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway for those of you that live here. I currently own a 1995 Honda Civic Sedan EX. Now, I'm not a total car wizard, I know a little bit to get by. My parents own and operate a shop on 19th Ave and Thunderbird Road. So, I can get things done for a pretty reasonable cost. The car has 194k on it, but she still purrs like a kitty. Now granted, I keep her maintained, I do drive it somewhat hard. But I get the feeling she enjoys it.
I've been lurking on this site for a long time, probably should have signed up first, but ahwell. I figure the best way to learn, is to read. I'm on here almost every night, scanning the archives, reading all the posts. Learning as I go. Money is sorta tight for me, at least. Working on that. Car does need a new paint job. Its got a bit of a sunburn. Its got a nice tan interior, looks very good inside. Everything seems to work fine. I've not done a whole lot as I'm saving up the cash, Hopefully. I have added a few Security features, as I want to keep this car. I had hopped on the whole staying JDM bandwagon, but quickly jumped off as I realised the prices of those parts. Hey, its just not for me. My plan for this car is too keep it stock looking, No fancy flares, but I would like it to have power. No blinking lights on this one, or pinwheels. Shes going to stay the same color, fresh paint here in a few weeks, with some window tint.
It also has a reasonable sounding Magnaflow (Xmas Gift)
Now, onto the good stuff.
I had originally planned on getting a B Series swap, but the more I think about it, thats a reasonable amount of money to save up. The Turbo D series turns me on all the more I hear about it. Its rarer then Turboing a B, and What can I say? I'd like to be different. I really would like to go Homemade on it, as I dont have a spare 3k for a Turbo kit. But that comes in due time.
First off. I just had the shop replaces the CV boots as they were knocking, it got oil and all that done. New Fuel filter. She honestly runs great for 195k on it. Just gets up and goes. Which I love. But I want more.

Now my questioning, Is this.
I dont want to fully build up a D series right off the bat, Sure I'll upgrade it as I go, but I cant just slap it all on at once.

Can My 195k Engine handle turbo?
IF not, Shall I purchase a new D Series?
How much does it cost for just a new one?
This car is a daily driver.
Also, a really stupid question. What D series is in my car?
Secondly, Which is the best D Series?

As you can tell, I'm pretty sold on staying with D. I love my baby and I want her to last, but I want to give her more Oooooooomph.
And, with some advice from you great guys and girls out there, I can be starting to think about what I'd like to buy. Now, I'll post some pics. Please give me your comments on her.
Thanks guys , I learn more from this site with each passing day.

David

turbo= how much boost??
new D series= if you want or rebuild the one you got
new= no just rebuild or used and depends
you should have a d16z6 in your 95 EX
you got the best D series for your year. i think the D16Y8 is the best as far as stock power, compression ratio (only if staying NA)

Will rebuilding it be cheaper then buying a new less miles one? I plan to run whatever boost is reasonable.

As for the b16, I'd love too, but I dont have a spare 2k atm.

well if you do (but not entirely neccessary depending on shape they are in) pistons, rings, rods, bearings (on crank for rods) and gaskets you are looking at around $1000 (might be less but not sure and if you do one you basically gotta do them all together)

turbo kit $3000 will give you more power than a B swap and take whats left and put into it

if you run 5-8 psi on a turbo you should be alright on internals for a bit

Well, Like I said, I dont' want to get a kit, I'd love to piece it together, I'll learn more like that too, and its cheaper. I talked to one of the Techs at our shop today, known him for years. Anyways, he said that in the long run it'd be better to just get a new D series rather then Rebuilding the 195k one I have in there. After I get a new one, I'll start to fix little things on it, Like plugs, wires, intake, header, etc.

Now, I've searched for sites and whatnot, but I can't seem to find a site that sells D series? Am I just missing something? What should I look to pay for just the engine?

Thanks again guys for all your help.
David.

What you need to do is go around to your local Honda-shops and let them know you're on the hunt for a dirty D. Give them your info etc. Tell them to give you a call after they do there next swap. Most B guys are more-than-willing to take a couple hundred for there "junk" motors.
I got my girlfriends complete Z6 swap for $150. Not a bad deal around my area.

Go to http://www.turbod16.com and read. Piece together a $1000 turbo kit. Get Uberdata, run 10psi and beat on the B boys.

Thanks Joboost, and the rest, but A turbo will come -After- I get the engine going.

Mwieczorek , What do you mean "Honda shops?" Talking about Junk Yards? Import Junkyards? Not exactly sure. Also, When I buy this used Engine, what should I watch out for?

Thanks again.
David.

Just look around Garage Shops in your Area Mostly in the Industrail Side of town thats how it is over here in florida, Alot of Tuner shops and Swap Shops.

Its fairly easy and just search around and see what they got done !!!

Most shop owners invite to come and look and see how they work and how fast they got stuff done. D- series engines are around everywhere after most people swap out for a B series and trust me you can get it for cheap prices man.

As for looking out for an engine just try to look how the internals if you can and look under the valve covers and overall just inspect for any cracks on the block

Alrighty, So I've found a few import Junkyards, and shops ,etc. I'm going to start calling around and getting prices. Now, I believe I have the D16Z6.
What do you guys think is the best D series out there? Is it the Y8 like Civictildeath said? Is what I have the best?
Thanks again.
David.

get a jdm d15b swap for it or boost your d16z6 if it still has some decent compression.
I say do a compression check at your parents shop, and if they are above 170 boost the hell out of it, it could go for another 100k if u take care of it, and a comp cam and valve springs would love boost. u can find the cam for 230 shipped, and the valvesprings for like 150shipped.

i would get a d16z6 because that is obd1 and thats what your 95 ex is, it will just be easier for you to swap in a new motor, with an obd 1 instead of converting it to obd2.

Thankyou Poe for the advice, I guess I'll get the compression check done, If I can, and we have the time. Not sure how much it is. Sadly enough it is a business, Can't just get it for free. Assuming It does turn out good, the compression is good. What parts are worthwhile upgrading on it for boost? Plugs? Wires? Manifolds?
Any help would be good. I'm reading every thread on that turbo16 site. Very good stuff.

Personally I'd prefer to get a pre-made kit. Like a Drag or F-Max, main reason being that they are more reliable out of the box, sure you can make a homemade kit reliable, but judging by your questions, you're still rather new to this, not that it's a bad thing. I just try and recommend the kit avenue because there are less headaches with fitment, and they are more complete, nothing more frustrating than finding everything you need, only to find out you need more.
