Default Pinging

I have this sound in my motor when I press the gas just a little bit at around 3k rpm. At first I thought it was my timing belt slapping but I just found out that when i would rev the motor to 3k and right when it drops down to 1k rev it again then therse this knock or slap like the valve is hitting my piston. When im at around 2-3k rpm and give a little bit of gas i can hear like a tapping or slapping or something, but when i give more gas it goes away. Is this pinging?

If you're cruising on the highway and you start to lean into the gas and you hear a slight pinging noise then that's it. If you're just sitting somewhere in neutral and reving your car and hearing something it could be a valve that needs adjustment, or possibly the timing belt tensioner. Get a friend to listen under the hood and see if he can locate the noise.

Then it is pinging.....so that's what it is....Also to get it to ping while on neutral takes like alot of tries, you have to catch it on the right time or whatever. I'll retard my timing tomarrow for temporally use untill i get my car tuned. Where's a good place to start at?18btdc? Motor is ls/v with ctr pistons.

pull 2 degrees out of it from where it's at now and see if that makes any difference.

Alright cool, thanks man. Oh yea, so there's no way it can ping by just revving it?

I suppose it's possible but it typically shows up more when the engine is under load and climbing a hill in a high gear. Highway driving is where it usually shows up clearly. Just pull 2 degrees out of it and if it makes no difference in the pinging sound it's probably a mechanical problem and not a pinging one.

Yea i got it tuned already. Only pings real low rpms like 1-2k. Stupid ctr pistons, i guess im just learning from my mistake. should of gone with some smaller slugs. So what can happen if i leave it the way it is?

It has the potential to harm the pistons over a long period of time but from the sounds of it, it probably isn't much to worry about since it's only slight pinging. Finding a fine metallic like dust or flake on the spark plug insulators would be an indication that the pinging is becoming harmful.
