Default Is this a sign of worn out clutch?

Starting in first gear is getting more difficult each day. It feels like clutch is slipping, which makes starting uneasy. What's typical cost to get clutch replaced? I am afraid I will have to get it replaced soon

1. I believe there are many topics on this issue and searching will answer many of your questions.

2. When you say "starting in 1st gear", I'll take that as moving from stand still (e.g. from a red light). what is your car doing exactly to make you say that it's slipping? is it shaking as if you're not giving it enough gas?

3. how long has this been happening? how many miles on veh?

4. at stand still, put your parking brake up, put trans in 4th, then let of of the clutch w/o pressing on gas. if motor stalls, your clutch is not slipping. if motor keeps running, you definitely have a slipping clutch. because your clutch is not grabbing, motor is not connecting with trans and thus not giving any gas has no effect.

5. you can also drive up a hill and at around 30mph, w/ gear in 3rd or 4th, step on the gas hard and see what happens to your rpm. if rpms go up but the rate of acceleration does not match the rate at which rpms are rising, your clutch is slipping.

hope that helps

Yes, it feels like its shaking as if I am not giving it enough gas. Car has about 155k miles, but do not know when the clutch was replaced last time.

Will try two methods you described above. I've never owned old vehicle before so this is my first time having slipping clutch. Just got this car 3 weeks ago...

Why try in 4th gear instead of 1st gear? what difference does it make?

Take the car to a hill and get up enough speed to sit at about 2-2.5k on the tach in 5th gear. When you start goin up the hill, push in the clutch, rev it up to about 4k, then let the clutch back out and keep givin it some gas. If the rev's don't go back down enough or much, your clutch is fried.

my clutch was bad. When i took it to redline on like first gear it would loose alot of power untill it caught in 2nd gear. Now i have a ACT SS clutch and prolite flywheel.
By the way i have a brand new exedy stage 1 disc for sale if you want it.

Yeah, first gear doesn't feel strong. My old 95 Civic EX felt even faster than my car in 1st gear...

How much are you looking to get?

To get the clutch replaced is fairly expensive, not including the price of my aftermarket clutch and flywheel, the total installation fees came to $329.80, which is fairly reasonable. Many people do it themselves, but all I hear is that it is a PITA to get the tranny to drop.

$300 labor seems reasonable. I can get new Exedy clutch kit for $120 shipped from ebay. Wonder if there are anyone willing to install clutch for around $200 here in NY.

I am willing to bet your clutch is bad. Mine went bad at 156K miles.

If you are planning for an H22 swap, I think now is the time. If your car is in need of a clutch and a timing belt/water pump replacement, there is no better time to do the swap. In the longrun, it will be A LOT cheaper.

Good luck.

get a helms and some tools and do it yourself. Gotta learn sometimes, but if you dont wanna get your hands dirty, then pay someone.

edit- Its not too hard.
