Should i get an ecu chip for my obd0 crx with a d16y8
Im limited to the things i can do to get a more out of my basically minime crx. It does have the si ecu. But im wandering if it will be worth it. As in will i actually get
5 more horses and slightly better gas mile. Thats what im really lookin for.

Also when the advertisement says the chip will redline at 8000, Does that mean it will be
safe to rev to that rpm, or does it just mean that the revlimiter will just kick in later on.

Most chips make you run too rich... Just get a VAFC. The only reason I would chip an ECU is to remove o2 sensor/revlimit/speedlimiter/etc..

the one im looking at for my 91 si ecu say it will remove the governor. And it says it will
increase fuel economy. i Guess for when your not racing.

VAFC seems too complicated for me, to install and use. Plus im still using the 91 si distributor

your best bet would be to get a vafc. Those generic chips you can buy are not tuned to your engine. and its not safe for your stock motor to rev that high. With the afc, it can be tuned to your engine and controls your vtek.

but its not a stock motor, its a 2000 d16y8 in a 88 crx with a 91 si ecu

and if i were to get the vafc , would i have to have it professionally tune or do they make it easy for an idiot like me to do it, like maybe presets.

so would the chip have any down sides to the health of my car. Im not worried about it raising the rpms cause id still shift around 6800 anyway which i think is what is the actual redline for the d16y8

If you chip, why not get something like turboedit and tune it?
No sense in getting some 'Mugen' or 'Spoon' chip that wasn't designed or tuned for your specific setup.

I think your best bet would be to do an obd1 conversion. Get a newer distributor and a p28 ecu and a harness conversion. You can get back some money selling your old ones. Then spend $15 on the electronics needed to convert the p28 so that any chip can be plug and play. You can load up uberdata programs off then net and complete datalogging free of charge then custom tune a program and have a chip burned to your exact engine specs.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by srv3fender &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">but its not a stock motor, its a 2000 d16y8 in a 88 crx with a 91 si ecu</TD></TR></TABLE>

So its a stock engine in another car, its still stock
("stock engine" means no special internals to take your abuse [9k redline], springs, retainers) lol

I agree, go OBD1 and get a P28
Rywire.com can supply you with the harness wiring and jkobd jumper harness all at once.
jkobd.com can supply you with a P28 ECU with ZIF socket and Datalogging USB Cable.

I did it on my 89 crx.

You only need 4 items:
- obd1 distributor
- obd1 ecu
- obd0-obd1 plug in harness
- 4 wire o2 sensor

Thats it, pretty easy.

I agree on the obd-1 conversion...best bet.

And a V-AFC scares you but chipping a ecu does not? Hmm...

:::EDITED content cuz im a dumbass:::

Use an OBD0 PM6 ECU and look at TurboEdit. You can throw A6 maps in there and slightly richen up the fuel to account for the better breathing of the Y8 and go from there.

No conversion harnesses, no new distros, no new O2 sensors...1 ECU, chipped ready to go...or save yourself some cash and chip the PM6 yourself. Easy to follow instructions are everywhere.

PM me if you need any help
