Should i get an ecu chip for my obd0 crx with a d16y8
Im limited to the things i can do to get a more out of my basically minime crx. It does have the si ecu. But im wandering if it will be worth it. As in will i actually get
5 more horses and slightly better gas mile. Thats what im really lookin for.

Also when the advertisement says the chip will redline at 8000, Does that mean it will be
safe to rev to that rpm, or does it just mean that the revlimiter will just kick in later on.

no, it wont be safe to shift that high, all its prolly doing is taking the rev limiter away. only way to safely shift that high is with a built head.

like i said im just lookin for 1-5 more hp and any at all fuel economy increase.

I wont probably rev past 6800 cause thats what the redline is for that engine. Wait will it
hurt my times if i dont rev to the limit of the chip.

is that the gimmick, the only hp increase is between 6800-8000 rpms

surely its for the whole powerband

anybody, i really want this chip to work even if its only 1 hp and 1 mpg more. As long as it doesnt do any harm.

What are you using to run Vtec on this? I'd suggest buying an OBD0 to OBD1 harness and using a stock or chipped P28... The P28 would run the motor the way it's supposed to be run and probably help you net a lot more HP as a result...

If you're using an RPM activated switch or a vtec controller they don't activate Vtec correctly... YES, these things do turn Vtec on BUT the computer turns on Vtec and changes to a different set of fuel and timing maps to compensate for when Vtec is activated...

You could possibly gain some fuel economy from this also...

so all i would need is the piggy back harness adapter and the p28

or do i have to do a bunch of other bs

Usually whenever converting from OBD0 to OBD1 you need to use an OBD1 distibutor and injectors.... since you've got the Y8 it should already have these.... also you should probably add the necessary Vtec wiring if you don't already have it installed...

know where i can get a diagram for the vtec solenoid?

So basically all i would have to do is get the money wise it buy the jumper harness and ecu. Well thats not too bad. vtec wiring should be that big of a deal. if a have a diagram.

I do believe the distributor is obd0. but i think ive heard of it be ok to use with the y8.
After all its the computer that sets the timing right?

wish there was a detailed step by step just for this. with pics. others seem to leave out large chunks when it comes to this.

You need to connect the vtec solenoid(OBD1 pin A4) and vtec pressure sensor(OBD1 pin D6).... the OBD0 to OBD1 harness should have these wires connected already so you'll have to add wires to the cabin harness of the car... here is a link from hasport that shows where you will add the wires on your car http://www.hasport.com/Tech/Wring/EFSi-VTEC.PDF

also you DO need an OBD1 or higher distributor the electronics implented in each are different than OBD0.. since you're using the OBD1 ecu you need the newer distributor...
I didn't think the D16y8 head could use a distributor from anything else(we did a mini-me swap here a while back and the Y8 head wouldn't work with any distributor but it's own)?...

also the computer doesn't set the timing at wide open throttle it reads from the timing maps....also if the distributor isn't right and it isn't in time then things won't work right even when the computer is adjusting the timing...

that diagram is for b16's

is it the same.

Also when i said vtec diagram i meant the female plugs from the solenoid under the hood. I dont even have male plugs on them.

yes the diagram is the same... it's where the vtec wires go......

also I'm not sure if the D16y8 has a vtec pressure switch since it's an OBD2 motor (some of them don't have it).. ... you may have to have someone program you a rom with vtec pressure switch disabled... I could make you a chip with this type of program for a few bucks (covering the cost of the chip and shipping).

finally, for wiring the vtec solenoid there is only 1 wire (usually green).... the solenoid is grounded on the motor since it's connected to the head... so you just run the 1 wire coming off of the vtec solenoid to the wire that you will add to your cabin harness.... if you have more questions you can email me cause I don't check honda-tech as regularly as my email.... brentfernandez@msn.com
