Default Question about JDM motors

I just bought a '95 JDM B16A. Is it common for jdm motors to have aftermarket parts already in them from Japan? The vtec in my motor sounds pretty crazy, like it has some serious cams. The engine from the outside looks stock though. Also, what are the V-tec rpm engagements for a B16??

i guess it is possible, a buddy of mine had a billet aluminum motor mount on his b18c1. what are you comparing the vtec engagement to, maybe a sohc?

In other words, when does v-tec kick in?... Somewhere around 5,200 rpm and 6,700 rpm I think it is on a gsr motor, not sure for a B16 though.

yes, it's very very possible that the surplus engine you got from japan is mildly built already. sometimes the tranny already has LSD too. youre lucky if you the engine you got has nice cams already

possible yet unlikely, you may just not be used to it and it could be the old "seat of the pants" feeling of fast

if you're comparing it to a gsr, then yes, vtec is louder on a b16 because of the gsr's "dual vtec". it has a primary engagement at like 4200 and a secondary at like 5800. numbers are probably wrong, but you get the idea. the gsr takes two smaller steps to get to full power where the b16 takes one big step.

My first motor had a very loud Vtec engagement as well. Prolly nothing special, why dont you pull the valve cover and look at the cams. Vtec Engagement on a stock b16 is 5800. Uh i doubt the motor has any internals, your just probably over joyed to have it in.

Isn't that the secondary runners?

I'm pretty sure there is only one VTEC solenoid.

It is uncommon but not unheard of. The the last time my car was on the dyno, I had to wait about 30 minutes for another car to be tuned. It was a Del Sol that just had a JDM GSR swap done. The only things he installed with the engine were an AEM short ram intake, DC sports header, clutch, and flywheel. His engine put down 176 hp and 125 tq, which is strong for a stock GSR, but the A/F ratio was all over the place. After my car was tuned, the Del Sol owner had the tech install a Hondata S100. After getting the A/F corrected and the vtec crossover point at a solid rpm, it put 184/134 to the tires. Turns out the engine came from over with 12:1 Toda pistons, CTR cams, and the ITR LSD 4.78 tranny. Needless to say, he was pretty stoked especially because he got to watch my JDM ITR swap do 169/120. I was unenthusiastic about the situation.

lol! thats some funny ****

I suppose ill share a story also.

Back in the day like 5+ years ago, I had a 1st gen longblock. I took off the head and sold it. Turns out the head was port and polished. I didnt even know.

When I took off the flywheel, I knew it felt light, but I didnt know it was a spoon flywheel untill after I sold it.

Regardless, live and learn heh

Ive imported tons of motors since, havent had much other goodies.

One time I got a motor with a spoon "ventuli" intake manifold gasket, that was kinda cool.

Usually when the cars are built like that they are flagged and the importer knows that they got **** done to them.

Yeah, now that I have had time to really drive my new B16, it probly has stock internals. I'm just used to a D16Z6 v-tec. The B16 v-tec compared to that makes it sound like it has cams, though! I'm going to take off the valve cover and look this week.

yes, but i didn't want to confuse him more with possibly having butterflies in his engine. thats why i posted it as "dual vtec" in quotations because that is the easiest way to describe it.

del sol im not trying to start an argument, but what do you mean by "dual vtec"? do you mean it has 2 vtec solonoids? civicross is right, im pretty sure there is only one vtec solonoid, i had mine replaced about a week ago
