Default in the market for a tool box - suggestions?

Looking to buy a toolbox. would like to spend around 1000, maybe more maybe less.

I don't want somthing cheap and flimsy like some craftsman boxes i have seen, but then again i dont want a 3500$$$ snapon box. Don't need something super huge just decent size to start me off.

I saw in the toolbox thread that a few people had the cosco box for 700, I think im gonna check that out.

What else would you guys recommend as a safe middle ground box?

Check into the tool boxes at Sam's Wholesale Club. They don't have a huge selection, but they have some nice ones. They have ball bearing drawers and are powder coated. I think somebody said they have a stainless one also.

Mine is a Homak brand (from Sams). It's tall enough that it's almost shoulder height, and is about 4 feet wide. It was $433 tax and all...with a nice coupon I had that took off about 10%.

Snap-on is my brand of choice, but other companies have almost as good a box for less. Try a used snap-on. ALso you can try Matco & Mac.

The Sams box is pretty good for the price or if you really want you can put togther a Lista for pretty cheap.

i like snap-on its all i buy from tools to tool box its all i really own, only own one other tool and thats a matco pick that i found haha, and the KRA series from snap on isn't all that bad, 2g's can have you a nice top and bottom box, i have the KRL7220 i think, it was $4500, but when you do this for a living everyday you have to spend some money for reliabilty, take that into consideration, if you don't do this daily for a living, i would just go get a craftsman professional series, good price, and pretty decent stuff,

Craftsman tool boxes are a ripoff. The cheaper ones are pieces of ****, and the better ones are way overpriced.

The tool box above is a Homak brand. It is carried by Sams. It is powdercoated, not painted. It has full ball bearing drawers and all the bells and whistles you need....and I use the tool box for a living also. It cost me under $450 with tax. You can't come near that with Craftsman or Snap-on.

Snap-on is a ripoff. There's a reason they can drive around in trucks and deliver tools....cause they're raping you and have HUGE profit margins. Hell, if you'll pay me $200 for a set of combination wrenches that I don't have $20 in, I'd drive around town and deliver them too. It's not all about good tools...it's about getting them at a reasonable cost...and Snap-on is not reasonable.

For wrenches, Craftsman is plenty good enough. For screwdrivers, they're complete ****, but the "Professional" series is actually pretty good. Husky and Kobalt make good stuff too.

I'd be a fool if I paid those huge prices for Snap-on tools. They do have some nice specialty tools, but for standard stuff, I'll keep my money in my pocket.

Check out kennedy boxes they are priced very well and are well made. Same manufacturer of the boxes that come on the Cornwell trucks.

You're joking, right?? Kennedy is not priced well unless you've just got to reach that "I'm a machinist status" by buying one. The guys on here don't strike me as rich or the type that will spend $400 on a tool box that can be carried in one hand.

Think about it. These guys often buy Clark or Harbor Freight welding machines, and you think they will spring for a Kennedy tool box? It would merely be a case of putting $50-worth of tools into a $400 box that is crammed full and can hold nothing else.

Ill be the first to say Snap-On is over priced, but if you can find one used do it. They really are nice tool boxes, i really like mine. I have a KRL1022, super deep drawers, and the power coating on those boxes is like no other.

Craftsman boxes are cheap heaps of ****. End of story, Englioid was correct, the cheap ones suck and the expensive ones are WAY too much.

Well said. That's why I like the Homak I bought. It's very near the quality you will get if you spend 5 times the money on one of the most expensive brands...and I mean VERY near.

Craftsman used to be good....when there just wasn't much selection of boxes. They have gotten passed up, but continued to jack their prices beyond the quality of product they're making.

i'm going to disagree with everything you just said, lol, i have had NO other wrenchs grip like my flank drive snap on, nothing grips like a snappy screwdriver, craftsman pro series, i only have one thing from that, a set of stubby wrenches, because i'm not strong enough to break those, but i have broken to many craftsman wrenches and other things and said **** it then started buying snap on, there IS a differance in quality i don't care what you say, when you do this every day for a living like me, you can't use cheap ****, this is your career hey if you don't want to invest and write it off on taxes thats your thing, but i buy the best for a reason because it dosn't break that often, and if i do i have NEVER had a problem with warrenty from my snap on man, plus the HUGE convenience factor is there, when he comes to you to give you your stuff. plus all the free stuff is killer too

They're not made to put a pipe on the end and tighten lug nuts with. If you can break the wrenches in normal usage, you're a badder man than I've ever met...cause I've never seen anybody that could break one. How about this: Weld the end to a large anvil, then see if you can break it off.

You've got to be kidding!!! haha!!! So you pay 5 times as much for tools, so you can get a tax savings that's less than 30% of that? You will pay $100 for a tool that you can get for $20 because you can get a tax savings of $20 on it? That's not very smart.

Yeah, there may be a difference in quality...but at what price?

Oh, you use them for a living? Big deal. I use the tools in the exact same situations you do. What's it matter if you use them more often? Your job depends on them? haha!!!

Manager: "I'm sorry, but as a professional, you should have tools that will not break. This is not the first time you have had a tool break while on the job. You're fired!"
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 99blackcivicSi &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">but i buy the best for a reason because it dosn't break that often, and if i do i have NEVER had a problem with warrenty from my snap on man, plus the HUGE convenience factor is there, when he comes to you to give you your stuff. plus all the free stuff is killer too </TD></TR></TABLE>
If you're paying 5 times as much as you would elsewhere, what kind of idiot salesman wouldn't deliver the parts and give you something free now and then? So lets say you break a socket today. When will the truck be by to give you a replacement? I can drive straight to Sears and get a replacement and you'll still be waiting on the truck to come by.

They're a scam that sells service more than tools. Their tools cost no more money to make than any other brand. They just offer you a few perks since you are willing to pay those huge prices for them.

I agree that Snap-On is WAY overpriced. I'm making a point of not buying any Snap-On unless I absolutely need to (which as yet to happen). Buying Snap-On is nothing but the mechanics' version of a pissing contest. It doesn't do much for you except compensate for what's in your pants.

Out of all things, don't buy a Snap-On tool box. Save you cash for the tools you'll be putting in the tool box, not the box itself

i paid about $189 for my Craftsman chest which is about 40" wide and 6 feet tall. it holds all the tools i'll ever need. it has about 2-3 of everything in it. i've never had a shelf break. i've never had anything happen to it and i've had it for about 6 years. its jammed full and i use it just about every day. i'm about to buy another one since i have it jammed so full and i like to have everything neat in it. i'll either buy the same exact thing or just buy a bigger craftsman chest and sell the one i have or keep it around. no way in hell would i spend $4k for a Snap-On chest. i dont care if i made $150k a year i still wouldnt buy one because just like Engloid said, youre paying for their service. if you really need a tool just buy a craftsman. and hell if it breaks then you can call a Taxi service and have them go pick one up for u. it would still be cheaper than a Snap-On. all you guys say that Craftsman is junk because they break. but then you go on to say that you buy Snap-On for the warranty, so if you need a warranty then they break too

I have a cheap craftsman, it has lasted forever and a day, it has never had a shelf break or cause any problems. I overload it with **** and don't think twice about it.

I can't think of a reason why you would pay more for a box then that....shelfs with bearings LOL riiight.
