Default D16 low RPM stutter

Hey guys, looking for help here.

The car is a 91 DX Hatch
The Motor is a 90 D16 SOHC (90 CRX Si)

I’ve been running the motor for a long time with no issues. Suddenly in the last couple of days, at low RPM the motor is stuttering really bad. Its like when I am on the gas, I have to push it down harder to force it to climb in RPM. Once above 3K RPM its fine, but below that, its horrible, and its getting worse. By worse I mean more frequent. Its seems to happen more once the car has warmed up, and hasn’t been happening all the time until Friday. I haven’t driven it since then and I was going to start with the usual suspects like the Cap and Rotor, and a friend told me to change the PCV valves as well. Cap and rotor seem fine very little play in the rotor, but I am going to replace them anyway.

Anyone have any more suggestions or experienced this before? Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, definately inspect your timing. I recently swapped a D15B7 with D16Z6 head into my 91 hatch and had the same problem. Studdering at low RPM and gradually getting worse, especially when it's warmed up. It got so bad it made it almost impossible to drive.
I suspected for some reason it was a bad TPS, but I picked up a timing light and found out that my ignition timing (distributor) was way off from factory specs, and my cam timing (due to the Z6 head) was off a half tooth-1 tooth. I've fized the ignition timing since then and it's been great. No more stuttering and I've driven it 100+ miles in 1 day with no problems.
So, definately pick yourself up a timing light and see where it's at. Chances are you'll be using the light in the future, so it's a good tool to own.

I actually haven’t checked the timing because it’s been running well for so long. The timing was set last summer, and I haven’t had any problems with it. I don’t see any reason why it would have suddenly slipped a tooth, but Ill check it and let you know. Guess it may be time for a new belt if it has.

Thanks guys, Ill check it out, and see if it helps. If not Ill be back!

Well my friend Matt came over (Matt what the hell is your name on here anyway). Thanks for bailing me out, again.

We changed the O2, the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and cleaned the TPS. Then we changed the battery and the terminals.

Seems to run fine now. My terminals and the battery may have been shot. But I’m guessing if that battery is gone, I will have to replace my alternator, and I don’t much like the sound the new rotor is making, it already sounds foobared, so I may new a new dizzy as well. Man, I love spending money

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys
