Timeing gun, or just set everything to TDC, and go from there

Hmm. I would think the service manual has all this stuff in it?

Does anyone know which section of it I should be looking at to get some instructions?

You mean the manual that came with the car? Because in that case I don't think it would. If from haynes or somthing then yes it should out line TDC and timing instructions. Good luck.

it's turning but it wont fire up.

I had problems with timing before n then after I adjusted it, it started to work again.

The weird thing is, my friend fixed it and it started up. But then I'm a dumbass and I adjusted it again because I thought it was supposed to match up with the white dash on the belt, but I guess it doesn't...

Could this be an alternator problem?

And what causes a faulty alternator?

u might wanna check your distributor also. If its turning but wont fire up cuz i had this happened to me twice. Thought it was the timing belt but it ended up being the distributor.

what exactly did you adjust? did you set your valve lash? also ground one of your spark plugs wit the wire hooked up to it on your block (take it out of the head) and check to see if your getting a good spark. if so check you plug wire routing it should be 1-3-4-2.

you need to drop more info stock motor or switch? if its a swap how recent? if it is the timing then its seriosly fucked, and the marks that you match up from the sounds are the cams have 2 white marks on them that match up. have you checked to make sure theres enough tension ...........

Turning, but not igniting? Could be plugs/wires, fuel pump/delivery, no gas?

Well before it would start up. I would sometimes have to twist the key twice to get it to start. I thought maybe the timing was off and I looked under the hood and marked up the notch on the block to the white mark on the timing belt. I guess that was stupid of me to do because I found out that wasn't even how to adjust it.

So it was actually running at one point, but it would take more then one try.

Oh yeah, just a little info on the motor. At one point I had a d16y8 but it had a spun rod bearing. The motor actually ran but it had really bad knock, and It had the same problem that I'm having with the z6, which is having to turn the key more than once to get it to start.... I had an extra D16Z6 with just the head and the block together, so I swapped out the Y8 for the Z6. I took all the parts off the Y8 and put it onto the Z6. Intake Mani, Alternator, etc etc.

So I dont know... It's possible that components off the Y8 were faulty, and the starting problems could have been something with the parts off the Y8.

I adjusted by sticking a ratchet into the crank and turning it. So I need to find out how to put it back to the right adjustments so I can try it again tomorrow. So does anyone know where in the service manual I can find the intructions? Like what section? It's the helm manual not the honda booklet

Here's a nice write-up on cam/ignition timing - with Pictures!

---> How to do Ignition and Cam Timing

Try that and see if it helps -

hook up the battery terminal clips, then put that wierd duhickey around your cylinder 1 spark plug wire and point it down at your crank pulley and look for the white mark... should be at top dead center on every strobe
