just wanting some opinions, the block has 150k on it and im re-building it,i have access to some older(out of a 96 jdm ITR block) pistons and rods from my buddy, also all the ITR valvetrain.Should i buy and use these since they are old and have alot of abuse,or just get all new items(itr pistons, valvetrain,)?also the car is a daily driver.
Dude....if you're rebuilding the motor....change the pistons......you can get some JE pistons with the same stock compression, but they'll be way stronger. Trust....when rebuilding, the key is to rebuild it to make it stronger. I know it's hard on honda engines, but get new pistons. And get a valvetrain upgrade....and you can also get camshaft seals to prevent oil leaks...get new camshafts, cam gear(s)....and you can port the head, get a 5 angle valve job.....hey...go all out when rebuilding...because one day you might want to go with forced induction. If you do all those things, your engine will be bullet proof. Oh...get new rods also, maybe Eagle Rods...do some more research on the company websites to read about these things...Good Luck..
Try lookin around for some newer parts. I personally run used engine parts since I got them for cheap. It all depends on your budget and where you plan on going with your setup. If your just rebuilding for the sake of having a quicker daily drive, then by all means get used parts that are in GOOD shape. Don't get parts you know have been beat up. As for what AJBurks said, don't listen to him. All the stuff he was ranting on about is not money well spent, and the build he was suggesting is very costly and time consuming (probabley double what your car is worth). Your rebuilding a daily driver, not a 10 second drag car. Again, it all comes down to how much you want to spend. I personally would never invest so much into a daily drive like what AJBurks suggests. Maybe if you had a spare engine you wanted to build up over time, then sure, go for it. Do some searches and see what people are using in their cars and what they like or dislike about this or that. Don't listen to a noob when it comes to rebuilding you motor. Good luck.
not everyone wants a bulletproof rebuild AJBURKS. there is no problem using used parts as long as they havent had the **** beat out of them... im sure you know how ur buddy drives. use common sense when building your motor. take your time and use good parts and check then recheck all ur clearances and you should be good to go..
I agree with everyone. I want to add a comment though - you can't have a project car and a daily driver at the same time - its not wise. Well you can, but then you just want to be careful. But i agree with everyones' post -

First thing is first. think about what you want out of the rebuild. Mild or wild? Then look at how much money you have to spend. Then research.
My opinion, if you want to do it right, get your parts new, but it will be expensive. I would use the parts from your buddy, except for on exception. I would get new oversized OEM pistons (for daily driver) and rebore the block. You probably know, Overtime, the cylinders in the block form some sort of oval shape from the pistons, due to the direction the crank assembly spins. You want to make sure you bore it out to get rid of the oval and to fit the piston spec. Otherwise there is a high risk of seeing your engine smoke within months.
I think the other internals may be fine, just get the rods shot peened, the crank assembly micropolished, and everything balanced and you should be fine.
Lastly be sure to get all new seals.
I am doing a rebuild with my whole motor, if you have any questions feel free to ask. AIM: paulcyrilt46
GOOD LUCK!

why dont you read the helms on the piston section, so you know where to measure them and what the spec is. for the price of a set of new oem style pistons, theres probably no way in hell I would use a set of used ones... thats justme tho
