Quick Rear Main Seal question
Yes I searched.
I need to replace my rear main. Is the seal on the outside or the inside of that cover on the side of the block? Meaning: do I have to take this cover off to get to the seal, or is the seal removable just after taking the flywheel off?

Once you remove the flywheel, you'll see the rear main seal. It's on the outside of the block.
When you go to pry the old one out, pry it from the top. Sometimes when trying to pry that seal out you can scar up the inside of the cover which can lead to leaking. When you go to drive the new one back in, make sure you do not drive it in too far otherwise that will also lead to leaking.

thanks. I remember trying to change it the last time I put a clutch in just for good measure, and I thought I had to remove that entire cover (requiring removal of oil pan and lower ex mani). Now its leaking really bad and i need to replace it.
Thanks for the info

Good advice has been given; but everytime I get down to the seal, I already have the oil pan off and it's not much of a hassle to pop off that sideplate and replace the seal that way. Just be careful putting it back in straight and you're good to go!

Well when I tried to take that plate off last time, after i took all the bolts/nuts out (including the two from the bottom) the plate still wouldn't budge. Maybe its because I didn't cut around the edge with an exacto knife
Ya gotta pop it off; it's sealed w/ silicone sealant, so it'll take some massaging to get it off if you don't have much space to work in.
I just replaced mine... I didn't pull the pan, but it was a bitch getting that thing out of there...
I didn't want to scratch anything, so I drilled a small hole in the main seal and screwed a small screw into it, then I just grabbed the screw with some pliers and pulled the seal out!
And like previously stated, make sure you don't push the seal in too far or it will leak... I got carried away and pushed mine in too far, so I had to buy another one... I'm glad I messed up the first time though, I originally got the Fel-Pro and the seccond time I splurged on the Beck/Arnley
The Beck/Arnley fit much better anyways...
